Djibouti is a small country, making it ideal for a short trip centered around Djibouti City. Spend one day at the iconic Lake Assal salt flat and another diving in the Gulf of Tadjoura, then use the remaining day to explore the city and port. The itinerary is compact yet avoids excessive travel. Djibouti has no passenger rail service and limited public transport, so most of your 4-day trip will rely on chartered vehicles and guided tours. It’s recommended to arrange transportation and boat trips in advance through a travel agency.
Check into your accommodation in the city center. In the afternoon, stroll through the Central Market and the Old Town to browse stalls selling spices, fabrics, and handicrafts. In the evening, take a walk along the seaside promenade to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Aden, then enjoy a meal of grilled fish and seafood to help your body adjust to the hot climate. The city is compact, and most key neighborhoods can be covered on foot or by short taxi rides. The midday sun is intense, so plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon.
Set out early in the morning for Lake Assal. Along the way, you’ll pass through lava plateaus and deserts. Upon arrival, see the white salt lake, salt pans, and the Low Point Monument, located about 155 meters below sea level. You can also take in the distant volcanic landscape of Ardoukôba. This is one of Djibouti’s most representative geological sites, perfect for photography and those interested in geology. Return in the afternoon, with an optional stop at a salt field to observe traditional salt-harvesting. The heat and strong glare from the salt flats make sun protection and hydration essential.
Head out to the Gulf of Tadjoura area. From around October to January, you may swim with whale sharks; during other months, snorkel to see coral reefs and tropical fish. Choose a certified operator, confirm the condition of equipment and life-saving gear, follow marine conservation guidelines, and avoid chasing or touching marine life. Return to the city in the afternoon and take time to rest. Enjoy a relaxed evening meal at a seaside restaurant.
Spend the morning revisiting the European-style Old Town, a mosque, or the salt fields, and pick up some souvenirs. In the afternoon, pack up and head to the airport. If your flight is in the evening, you might opt for a half-day snorkeling trip to Musha Island or simply relax at a beachfront café. Before leaving, use up or exchange any leftover Djiboutian francs for U.S. dollars.
