Itineraries 2026-10-03 1 views 7 days
Using Djibouti City as a hub, this route connects salt lakes, volcanic landscapes, and diving in the Gulf of Tadjoura into a long itinerary stretching from the city to the wilderness.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–2: Djibouti City → Day 3: Arta and Day Forest → Day 4: Whale Sharks and Diving in the Gulf of Tadjoura → Day 5: Lake Assal → Day 6: Dikhil and Lake Abbe → Day 7: Return to Djibouti City for Departure. Public transport in Djibouti is limited, so the entire trip is mainly based on private car hire or joining a tour group. Djibouti City serves as the only base.

Day 1: Arrival in Djibouti City

After entry, settle in the city first. In the afternoon, visit the Central Market and the Old Town. In the evening, head to the seaside promenade to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Aden, allowing your body to adjust to the hot climate and exchanging some small cash at the market.

Day 2: City Tour of Djibouti

In the morning, visit European-style colonial buildings and local mosques to learn about the history of this port city, which evolved from French Somaliland. In the afternoon, you can go to the fishing port or salt flats to experience local life. In the evening, enjoy grilled fish and seafood at a local restaurant. If time permits, consider a half-day snorkeling trip to Musha Island (Moucha).

Day 3: Arta and Day Forest

Drive to Arta and the Day Forest (Forêt du Day) in the Goda Mountains. As the altitude rises, the temperature drops noticeably, making it suitable for hiking to observe mountain vegetation and endemic bird species. This is one of the rare green areas in Djibouti, offering a strong contrast to the coastal desert.

Day 4: Gulf of Tadjoura: Whale Sharks and Diving

Head to the Tadjoura area for a boat trip. From around October to January, you may snorkel or dive with whale sharks. During other times, you can also arrange snorkeling and coral reef observation. Be sure to choose a certified operator, follow marine conservation regulations, and avoid chasing or touching marine life.

Day 5: Lake Assal

Travel to Lake Assal to see the white salt lake, salt pans, and black lava landscape located about 155 meters below sea level—the lowest point on the African continent. Return in the afternoon, with possible distant views of volcanic plateaus along the way. The area experiences high temperatures and strong glare from the salt surface, so bring sufficient sun protection and stay hydrated.

Day 6: Dikhil and Lake Abbe

Head toward Dikhil and visit Lake Abbe to see its limestone chimneys and salt-alkali plains. This area is close to the border, so confirm the security situation in advance. You must travel with a reliable group and strictly follow your guide’s arrangements. Do not stray from the group or cross border areas.

Day 7: Return and Departure

Return to Djibouti City, revisit the souvenir market if desired, have a meal in the city, then head to the airport for departure.

Tips

  • Djibouti’s attractions are scattered and public transport is limited, so hiring a car or joining a tour is the only realistic option. It’s recommended to confirm the itinerary and vehicle with your travel agency in advance.
  • For desert and salt lake trips, carry plenty of water, try to avoid the midday heat, and wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat.
  • Border and remote areas may pose safety risks. Always confirm security arrangements in advance and follow safety advice from your team and embassy.
