Base yourself in Munich, venturing out during the day and returning to the city at night. This saves time on frequent hotel changes and allows you to experience Bavaria’s castles, lakes, and mountains all in one trip. Munich Central Station is the hub for nearby routes, and a Bavarian State Ticket covers most regional transport.
Marienplatz and the New Town Hall Glockenspiel (performances at 11:00 and 12:00) → Frauenkirche → Lunch at Viktualienmarkt → Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens → Evening at the Chinese Tower Beer Garden in the English Garden. City attractions are close together and can be explored on foot or via subway. End the day at the Hofbräuhaus for a taste of Bavarian atmosphere.
Depart early from Munich Central Station to Füssen (Bavarian State Ticket valid). Booking a timed entry slot is required for Neuschwanstein Castle’s interior. Afterward, walk to Marienbrücke for panoramic views. In the afternoon, visit Hohenschwangau Castle or Alpsee Lake. Return in the evening. Photography is not allowed inside the castle, and large luggage must be stored. Allow time for queuing.
Take an electric boat cruise on Königssee, listening to the horn echo at the Echo Wall along the way. Hike after reaching Obersee in the afternoon. Alternatively, add a visit to the Salt Mine or Eagle’s Nest to experience the Alpine landscape. Boat rides and hikes around the lake take about half a day to a full day—wear comfortable shoes.
If you prefer snow-capped peaks, take a cogwheel train and cable car up the Zugspitze (Germany’s highest peak) for views of up to four countries on clear days. Return to Munich afterward for souvenir shopping before heading to the airport. If the weather is poor, opt for museums and shopping in the city to avoid disappointment.
If you’re into cars and technology, replace one day with visits to the BMW Museum and Deutsches Museum. For a charming town experience, spend a day in Rothenburg ob der Tauber or Nuremberg to explore well-preserved medieval streets. In winter, swap the lake for Christmas markets and hot springs—equally rewarding.
