Practical Tips
Bhutan operates a quota-based, group tour system, and many details must be confirmed in advance through a licensed travel agency. The following ten points cover group tours, costs, etiquette, and mountain travel considerations.
- Mandatory Group Tours: Travel to Bhutan must be booked through a government-authorized licensed travel agency. Travelers are generally required to join a group and be accompanied by a licensed guide throughout the trip. Independent travel is not permitted.
- Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): Foreign tourists are required to pay a daily Sustainable Development Fee. As of 2023, this is typically USD 100 per person per night. Some nationalities may qualify for discounted rates, and different rules apply for children and certain circumstances. Please refer to the latest official announcements.
- Package Pricing: Travel packages are usually priced in U.S. dollars and typically include accommodation, meals, transportation, and a guide. Confirm what is included and what requires additional payment in advance to avoid unexpected charges on-site.
- Appropriate Attire: Shoes must be removed when entering dzongs (fortresses), temples, and religious sites. Men should wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, while women should avoid short skirts and revealing clothing.
- Photography Etiquette: Always ask for permission before taking photos of Buddha statues, monks, or religious ceremonies. Photography may be prohibited inside certain halls, and flash photography is not allowed.
- Religious Taboos: Do not touch Buddha statues or religious objects, step over offerings, or walk around stupas in a direction other than clockwise.
- Tobacco Restrictions: Bringing cigarettes into Bhutan requires declaration and payment of tax. Smoking in public places is prohibited. Please follow the relevant regulations.
- Mountain Roads and Motion Sickness: Mountain roads are winding and narrow. Bring medication in advance. During the rainy season, watch out for falling rocks and landslides. Check road conditions for the day and allow extra travel time.
- Time Zone and Country Code: Bhutan is UTC+6. The country code is +975.
- Cash Preparation: ATM access is limited. Carry enough U.S. dollar cash and keep it secure. Small purchases can be made using Ngultrum (Bhutan’s local currency).
