Transport Guide 2026-10-03 0 views
Transportation in high-altitude countries has its own unique aspects. In Bolivia, cable cars and overnight buses are key travel keywords.

Arrival and Getting into Town

AirportHow to Get into TownTime/Price
La Paz (LPB)Taxi or airport busAbout 30–45 minutes, 40–70 Bolivianos
Uyuni (UYU)TaxiAbout 5–10 minutes, short trip
Santa Cruz (VVI)Taxi or busAbout 30 minutes, 50–80 Bolivianos

Note: La Paz International Airport is actually located in the high-altitude city of El Alto, at around 4,000 meters above sea level. After landing, take it easy and avoid strenuous activity right away.

Getting Around the City

  • Cable Car (Mi Teleférico): An aerial transit system connecting La Paz and El Alto. It’s affordable and offers great views, making it the most recommended way to travel and sightsee.
  • Taxis and Buses: Taxis usually don’t use meters—agree on a fare before getting in. Bus routes are complex, so use them with caution if you’re not familiar with the area.

Between Cities

  • La Paz – Uyuni: Overnight bus about 10–12 hours, flight about 1 hour.
  • La Paz – Copacabana: Bus about 3–4 hours, a common route to Lake Titicaca.
  • La Paz – Sucre: Flight about 45 minutes, bus about 10 hours.
  • La Paz – Santa Cruz: Flight about 1 hour, the main route connecting the highlands and lowlands.

Tips

  • Long-distance buses come in standard and luxury classes. For overnight buses, choose a reclining seat and keep your luggage secure.
  • Mountain roads in the highlands have many curves—travelers prone to motion sickness should prepare in advance.
  • Road conditions to salt flats and highland lakes are poor, so be sure to arrange transport through a reputable travel agency.
