Bolivia 4-Day Short Trip: Highlights of La Paz and Uyuni
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 days
See the Mirror of the Sky even with limited time: Use La Paz as your gateway and head straight to the Uyuni Salt Flats.

Idea

Using La Paz as a hub, spend Day 1 acclimatizing and exploring the city, then focus on Uyuni for the next 3 days. This itinerary is ideal for short-term travelers transiting from Peru or Chile. If the water levels are good during the rainy season, you can catch the Mirror of the Sky effect during both sunset and sunrise, making this a great value option for a short trip.

Day 1: La Paz

Ride a cable car for city views → Visit Murillo Square and the Cathedral → Explore the Witches’ Market → Check out the Moon Valley. Keep activities light on this first day to adjust to the altitude of around 3,600 meters, go to bed early, and prepare for the long journey and high elevation the next day.

Day 2: Travel to Uyuni

Fly to Uyuni in the morning or take an overnight bus. Upon arrival, join a sunset salt flat tour and wait for the sky’s reflection. Stay overnight in a salt hotel or a local guesthouse. Dress warmly and stay hydrated—salt hotels have limited water and electricity, so be prepared for basic conditions.

Day 3: In-Depth Salt Flat Tour

Watch the sunrise at dawn → Visit the Train Cemetery → Explore the salt piles in the salt fields → Hike on Incahuasi Island (Cactus Island). Return to town in the afternoon to rest. If you’ve joined a 3-day tour, continue south to the highland lagoons to see Red Lake and flamingos.

Day 4: Highland Lakes or Return

Depending on your schedule, join a one-day highland lake tour to see Red Lake, Green Lake, and flamingos, or return to La Paz for your connecting flight. Allow plenty of time for your return flight or night bus, as weather and road conditions in the highlands may affect schedules—avoid tight connections.

Tips

  • Nighttime temperatures in Uyuni can drop below 0°C. Bring warm clothing, a hat, and a sleeping bag liner, as salt hotels offer limited heating.
  • Most salt flat tours are cash-only, so carry enough Bolivianos. ATMs in town are scarce and may have long lines.
  • Roads can be slippery during the rainy season, which may delay travel. Leave a buffer day before your next flight.
  • The high-altitude sun is very strong and can cause sunburn—even on cloudy days, apply sunscreen.
  • Bring motion sickness medication and drinking water, as long off-road drives can be very bumpy.
