Complete Guide to Transportation in Azerbaijan: Baku Airport, Metro, Ride-Hailing Apps, and Overnight Trains
Transport Guide 2026-10-03 0 views
Airport express buses into the city, metro transportation cards, Bolt ride-hailing, and overnight trains to Sheki — this guide covers all the main ways to get around Azerbaijan and their fares.

Arrival and Getting into Town

Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is about 25 kilometers from the city center. The airport express bus runs every 30 minutes and costs 1.3 manat, taking roughly 30 minutes to reach the southern transport hub. Taxis at the airport counter have fixed prices, with rides into the city costing about 25–30 manat. You can also use the Bolt app for a cheaper ride. It’s recommended to take a taxi if you arrive late at night, as the metro operates until around 11 PM.

Getting Around the City

  • Metro: Baku has three metro lines — red, green, and purple — covering most of the main urban areas. A single ride costs just 0.4 manat. You’ll need to buy an İkart transportation card at the station (with a 2 manat deposit, which can be shared among multiple people).
  • Buses and Marshrutka Minibuses: These also use the transportation card. Marshrutkas run on frequent routes, though the signs can be confusing, making them handy for short trips.
  • Ride-Hailing: Bolt is the most reliable option, with transparent pricing. You can cross much of the city for 3–8 manat. Regular street taxis don’t use meters, so always agree on a price before getting in.
  • Walking: Walking around the Old City and along the Baku Boulevard is a great experience. It’s also possible to walk between the New City and the Old City in around 20 minutes.

Intercity Travel

  • Train: Baku Railway Station (near the 28 May metro station) runs trains to Sheki (around 6 hours; overnight sleeper trains are recommended), Ganja, and Tbilisi in Georgia. Tickets can be purchased via the official app or at the station.
  • Long-Distance Buses and Marshrutkas: The Central Bus Station has services to Sheki, Quba, Lankaran, and other destinations. Marshrutkas leave when full, with fares ranging from 5–10 manat.
  • Private Car Hire: A day tour to Gobustan and the mud volcanoes costs about 40–60 manat. A full-day trip with a driver and translator is around 100 manat.

Useful Tips

  • Metro tunnels are deep, and the elevators are long. Avoid peak times and wear your backpack at the front.
  • The Caspian Sea weather is changeable, so allow extra time for intercity travel.
  • Tax refund for departures is handled at the airport. Keep your receipts when shopping.
