From visa on arrival, cash preparation, volcano safety, and kava etiquette — these details will make your island trip smoother.
Vanuatu is known for its volcanoes, shipwrecks, and pristine islands. Many experiences here are nature- and tradition-based, so safety and etiquette are especially important. These 10 tips will help you plan your volcano hikes, dives, cash use, and kava sessions more smoothly.
- Visa & Transit: Most foreign visitors can usually obtain a visa on arrival. If transiting through Australia, Fiji, or New Zealand, be sure to check transit visa requirements and connecting flight regulations in advance.
- Cash Preparation: ATMs are limited on outer islands, so bring U.S. dollars or Australian dollars and carry enough cash. The local currency does not accept direct exchange of US dollars. Use cash for small purchases.
- Volcano Safety: Climbing Mount Yasur requires a guide. Be mindful of volcanic ash and wind direction, stay within marked safe zones, and avoid crossing barriers or warning areas. The climb may be temporarily closed in high winds.
- Shipwreck Diving: The SS President Coolidge is a deep dive site and a military wreck. A suitable diving certification is required, and you must follow guide instructions. Do not enter sealed compartments.
- Kava Etiquette: When trying kava, observe local customs. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those on medication should drink with caution. First-timers should start with a small amount.
- Traffic Rules: Drive on the right, same as in many countries. However, rural roads are narrow and potholed. Drive cautiously and avoid night driving if renting a car.
- Cyclone Season: From November to April is cyclone season. Monitor weather alerts before traveling and stay flexible for possible flight or ferry changes.
- Power Plugs: Electricity is 220–240V, 50Hz. Plugs are mainly Australian-style and Type I. Bring a power adapter and a portable charger.
- Mosquito & Sun Protection: Tropical sun is strong and mosquitoes are common. Use sunscreen and insect repellent. Drink bottled water and pay attention to food hygiene.
- Tips & Taxes: Most bills include taxes and service charges. Tipping is not mandatory but small tips for porters and guides are appreciated.
