Tuvalu Travel Guide: Ultra-Rare Flights, Runway Squares, and Cycling the Atolls
Transport Guide 2026-10-03 0 views
Traveling around Tuvalu boils down to one simple rule: treat the scarce flights as the first piece of your itinerary puzzle.

International Flights

RouteAirlineDetails
Suva (SUV), Fiji — Funafuti (FUN)Fiji AirwaysOnly a few flights per week, about 2 hours one-way, extremely limited seats

This is pretty much the only air link between Tuvalu and the rest of the world. Ticket prices fluctuate significantly by season, so book 1–2 months in advance and align your flight dates with available homestay options. During peak season, even seats between flights can sell out.

Airport Transfers

The airport is located right next to Vaiaku Village. You can walk to most homestays between the runway and the coast. Most homestays offer free airport pickup. There’s no official taxi fare system—just agree on a price before getting in.

Atolls & Inter-Island Travel

  • Walking and Biking: Fongafale Island is just over 10 km long—you can bike across it in half a day.
  • Causeways: These connect the main reef to the lagoon waters and are pedestrian-friendly, serving as the only “cross-sea” passages.
  • Outer Reef Boat Hire: Trips to uninhabited sandbanks and protected areas are charged per boat. Booking through your homestay owner is safest. Always confirm life jackets and return times.
  • Inter-Island Transport: Travel to outer islands like Vaitupu relies on government supply ships or limited inter-island flights, with irregular schedules and frequent weather-related cancellations. Not recommended for first-time visitors planning core itineraries.

Tips

  • Although flight cancellations are rare, they do happen—build in a full day buffer to your plans.
  • The runway area is cleared before takeoff and landing; just follow local instructions.
  • Roads can be slippery when wet and poorly lit at night—bring a headlamp or flashlight for evening walks.
  • Bicycle rentals cost around AUD 10–15 per day and can be arranged at homestay front desks or small shops.
