Days 1–3: Ashgabat | Day 4: Darvaza | Day 5: Mary & Merv | Day 6: Kunya-Urgench | Day 7: Return to Ashgabat for departure. Domestic travel is mainly via private vehicles arranged by tour operators and internal flights. Road conditions in desert areas are basic, and the itinerary must follow the officially declared route.
Depart early in the morning and cross the Karakum Desert for about 3–4 hours to reach the Darvaza Gas Crater. This crater, dozens of meters in diameter, has been burning continuously since it was accidentally ignited in 1971. At night, the flames illuminate the sand dunes, giving it the nickname “Door to Hell.” Dinner, stargazing, and overnight camping are available at nearby campsites. Please bring your own warm clothing and lighting equipment.
Return or take an internal flight to Mary, then visit the ancient ruins of Merv. Once one of the most prosperous cities on the Silk Road, Merv features well-preserved monuments such as the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum and city walls, which are UNESCO-listed. Allocate around half a day here.
Head north to Kunya-Urgench, once the capital of the Khwarezm region and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ancient tombs, minarets, and mosque ruins are scattered across the oasis.
Fly back to Ashgabat by internal flight. Explore the most famous markets and souvenir shops (other than those near Darvaza), shop for carpets and handicrafts, then head to the airport. Before departure, pay attention to foreign currency carry limits and keep your exchange receipts.
