List of Natural Highlights in South Sudan: Boma National Park, Sudd Wetlands, and the White Nile
Must-See Attractions 2026-10-03 0 views
The great migration of antelopes in Boma and the renowned Sudd Wetlands are famous, but until the security situation improves, they remain difficult to access as regular travel destinations and should be approached with caution.

National Parks and Grasslands

  • Boma National Park: Known for the large-scale migration of wildlife, including white-eared kob, and considered one of the largest terrestrial animal migrations in the world; entry requires qualified tour operators and security support, and it is not advisable to visit when safety conditions are not met.
  • Bandingilo National Park: A key wildlife reserve in the south, featuring a mix of grasslands and wetlands, also restricted by security and infrastructure issues, currently difficult to access regularly.
  • Nimule National Park: Located near the southern border, known for its grasslands and wildlife; high transportation and safety requirements make it unsuitable for independent travel.

Wetlands and Rivers

  • Sudd Wetlands: One of the largest freshwater wetlands in the world, where the White Nile spreads out into vast swamps and river networks, rich in water birds and wildlife; not suitable for general travelers to venture deep into.
  • White Nile: The main river running through the country, forming wide waters in Juba, it is a central geographical and cultural symbol of South Sudan and supports the livelihoods of communities along its banks.

Cities and Culture

  • Juba: The capital and main gateway, located on the banks of the White Nile; offers opportunities to explore local markets and community life, and is a relatively feasible place to stay.
  • Wau and Malakal: Important regional cities; check local security and transport conditions before traveling, and self-guided visits are not recommended.

Ecological and Migration Background

The grasslands and wetlands of South Sudan together form an important ecological corridor in East Africa. During the seasonal transition between dry and rainy seasons, herbivores such as white-eared kob move across the grasslands around Boma and Bandingilo in search of food, in numbers comparable to the famous wildebeest migration in East Africa. However, due to prolonged instability and limited accessibility, it is far less known internationally than similar landscapes in Tanzania and Kenya. The Sudd Wetlands play a crucial role in flood storage and water purification in the upper Nile basin and are an essential part of the entire Nile River system.

Important Notes

Most of these sites are located in areas with higher security risks and limited tourist facilities, and travel conditions vary greatly between the rainy and dry seasons. Travel advisories recommend avoiding travel to South Sudan at present. Always refer to official travel advisories before planning a trip and do not visit without proper safeguards or rely on unofficial arrangements. It is more responsible to learn about and follow these places from afar than to risk visiting them.
