Traveling eastward from the small capital on the Danube River, this route combines Alpine lake hikes in the Carpathians with multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The entire journey can be completed conveniently by train and bus, making it ideal for a one-week holiday.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–2: Bratislava → Day 3–4: High Tatras → Day 5: Spiš Castle & Levoča → Day 6: Košice → Day 7: Return after visiting Bardejov. Slovakia’s national rail network connects Bratislava and Košice, with convenient intercity trains and buses.

Day 1: Bratislava – Stroll Through the Old Town

Upon arrival, ease into the pace by exploring the Old Town: Main Square, Old Town Hall, Michael’s Gate, and craft shops in the narrow alleys. Don’t miss the “Man at Work” statue peeking out from a manhole. In the evening, take a walk along the Danube to admire the UFO Bridge and the Castle Hill illumination.

Day 2: Bratislava – Castle & Devin Castle

In the morning, visit Bratislava Castle for panoramic views of the Danube and the city. Then head to St. Martin’s Cathedral and the Blue Church. In the afternoon, take a bus to Devin Castle, located at the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers and offering views toward Austria. Return to the city in the evening.

Day 3: Journey to the High Tatras

Take a train to Poprad or Štrba, then transfer to a mountain railway or bus to reach the mountains, staying overnight in Štrbské Pleso or Tatranská Lomnica. In the afternoon, take an easy lakeside walk to acclimate to the clear, cool alpine lakes.

Day 4: Hiking in the High Tatras

Choose a trail that suits your fitness level: take a cable car to Lomnický Peak or Kriváň, then hike to alpine lakes like Štrbské Pleso; or enjoy a leisurely walk along the green trails of Tatranská Lomnica. Mountain weather is unpredictable—bring warm layers and rain gear, and always follow marked paths.

Day 5: Spiš Castle & Levoča

Travel to Spiš Castle, one of Central Europe’s largest castle ruins, jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 along with its surroundings. Climb to enjoy views of the surrounding hills and villages. In the afternoon, visit nearby Levoča Old Town and St. James Church, admiring the well-preserved medieval square.

Day 6: Košice

Košice, Slovakia’s largest city in the east, features the Gothic masterpiece St. Elisabeth Cathedral, while its main street is lined with softly colored historic buildings and cafés. Stop by the East Slovak Museum, and dine in the evening on the pedestrian street.

Day 7: Bardejov & Return

Bardejov Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its square surrounded by well-preserved Gothic and Renaissance houses. After exploring, depart from Košice Airport or take a train back to Bratislava or Vienna.

Tips

  • Train tickets can be purchased on the ZSSK website or at stations; check schedules in advance for mountain routes.
  • High Tatra cable cars and trails are highly weather-dependent—check official operating information before heading out.
  • The drive between Bratislava and Vienna takes about 1 hour, allowing flexible cross-border travel arrangements.
