Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
From a castle at the confluence of two rivers to a city of music festivals and scenic mountain landscapes, this Balkan cultural route connects cities, river islands, and countryside. Travel by train or self-drive is both convenient and comfortable.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–3: Belgrade → Day 4: Novi Sad → Day 5: Subotica or along the Danube → Days 6–7: Zlatibor or Tara National Park. Cities are connected by bus or train. The train ride from Belgrade to Novi Sad takes about 30–40 minutes, while driving offers more flexibility.

Day 1: Arrival in Belgrade

Check in near the city center or the old town. In the evening, stroll along Knez Mihailova Street, experience the city vibe at Republic Square and the old town alleys, and enjoy a traditional grilled meat dinner with live music on Skadarlija, the bohemian street.

Day 2: Belgrade: Castle and Riverside

In the morning, visit Kalemegdan Fortress and take in the views of the Sava and Danube rivers from the ramparts at their confluence. In the afternoon, explore St. Sava Temple to admire the grandeur of Orthodox architecture. End the day with nightlife at the riverside bars or river clubs along the Sava.

Day 3: Belgrade: Ada Ciganlija Island and Markets

Head to Ada Ciganlija, the island in the Sava River, where you can swim, cycle, or walk along the lake in summer. Visit the Dorćol or Kalenić markets in the afternoon to sample local cheeses, sausages, and desserts. Return to the city center in the evening.

Day 4: Novi Sad

Travel to Novi Sad in the morning. Climb up to Petrovaradin Fortress for panoramic views of the Danube River and the city. Spend the afternoon wandering the pedestrian streets and Liberty Square in the old town. If visiting in July, don’t miss the famous EXIT music festival.

Day 5: Subotica or Along the Danube

Visit the northern town of Subotica to admire its Art Nouveau architecture and the City Hall, or choose a riverside town along the Danube for a relaxing stroll and to experience the pastoral scenery of the Vojvodina Plain.

Day 6–7: Zlatibor and Tara Mountains

  • Day 6: Head to the Zlatibor mountain area and ride the famous narrow-gauge scenic railway (Šargan Eight). Stay in a mountain guesthouse in the evening.
  • Day 7: Explore Tara National Park and classic sights such as the cabins along the Drina River, then return to Belgrade for departure.

Tips

  • There are frequent trains between Belgrade and Novi Sad, making it more hassle-free than driving.
  • Accommodation in Novi Sad can be tight during the EXIT Music Festival, so book several months in advance.
  • The mountain roads have many curves—drive carefully and watch the weather conditions.
