Classic 7-day Puerto Rico itinerary: Old San Juan Forts — El Yunque Rainforest — Bioluminescent Bays of Vieques
A three-part week-long journey: historic Old San Juan, El Yunque Rainforest and the east coast, plus bioluminescent bays and wild horses on Vieques Island — covering urban, rainforest, and island experiences in one Caribbean trip, ideal for first-time visitors.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1–2: Old San Juan and Condado → Day 3: El Yunque Rainforest and the east coast → Day 4–6: Vieques Island (or Culebra Island) → Day 7: Return to San Juan for departure. Car rental and self-driving are the main options, with road conditions across the island matching those in the continental U.S.
Day 1–2: Old San Juan – History & City Life
- Day 1: Check in at Condado or Old San Juan → Stroll the blue-brick alleys of the old town → Watch the sunset and kites from El Morro Fort in the evening → Dinner at a local restaurant in the old town.
- Day 2: Visit El Morro and San Cristóbal Forts → Explore churches and plazas in the old town → Take the Casa Bacardi rum distillery ferry in the afternoon → Enjoy live salsa music or drinks at an old town bar in the evening.
The combined ticket for the two forts is about $10 USD and can be used for separate visits over two days; the lawn at El Morro Fort is a popular kite-flying spot, with the best views and photo ops when the sea breeze is strongest in the evening — arrive about an hour early to secure a good spot. The Casa Bacardi ferry departs from the old town dock, and the tour including a rum tasting experience costs around $20–30 USD.
Day 3: El Yunque Rainforest and the East Coast
Drive about 1 hour to El Yunque National Forest (El Yunque), hike the La Mina Falls trail and visit the observation tower (advance booking required via Recreation.gov); in the afternoon, head to Luquillo Beach or the Piñones Mangrove Boardwalk. Overnight in Fajardo. The rainforest trails can be slippery, and waterfalls are more spectacular after rain — but watch for thunderstorm warnings.
Days 4–6: Vieques Island – Bioluminescence & Wild Horses
- Day 4: Fly to Vieques via small plane from Ceiba or take the ferry from Fajardo → Rent a jeep to find wild horse herds → Join a transparent kayak night tour in Mosquito Bay in the evening to see the world’s brightest bioluminescence.
- Day 5: Relax on Sun Bay or Blue Beach with snorkeling → Visit the lighthouse and wildlife refuge on the island’s southern coast in the afternoon.
- Day 6: Take a day trip by boat to Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island (often ranked among the world’s best beaches), then return to Vieques or go straight back to the main island in the evening.
Mosquito Bay night tours are best on moonless or low-moon nights; the transparent kayak tour costs about $50–60 USD per person. Wild horses roam freely on the island — slow down and yield if you encounter them on the road, but do not touch or feed them. The Culebra day trip includes the ferry and beach chairs. Flamenco Beach can be very sunny at noon, so bring plenty of sun protection and water.
Day 7: Departure
Return to San Juan, shop for souvenirs and coffee in the old town, then head to the airport for departure.
Tips
- Bioluminescence in Mosquito Bay is less visible around the full moon, so check the moon phase when booking and aim for the new moon period.
- Ferry tickets to Vieques are limited during peak season, and small planes should be booked 2–3 days in advance.
- Both rainforest reservations and bioluminescent bay tours are popular — book them as soon as your itinerary is confirmed.
