Classic Montenegro 7-Day Itinerary: Kotor Bay – Budva – Cetinje – Durmitor – Lake Skadar
Experience the highlights of Montenegro in one trip: the ancient seaside town of Kotor Bay, the coastal old town of Budva, the former royal capital of Cetinje, and the Black Lake of Durmitor. Enjoy both coastal and mountain scenery without missing a thing.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1–2: Kotor Bay → Day 3: Budva and Sveti Stefan → Day 4: Cetinje → Days 5–6: Durmitor → Day 7: Lake Skadar and return to Podgorica. Self-driving is recommended (bus services in mountainous areas are limited), but travelers without a car can also complete the main route using long-distance buses.
Days 1–2: Kotor Bay: Fjords and Ancient Towns
- Day 1: After arrival, check into a hotel in the Old Town of Kotor → in the evening, hike up the 4.5-km city wall to St. John’s Fortress for a sunset view over the entire bay. It’s best to go early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the heat.
- Day 2: Take an early morning boat to Perast and visit Our Lady of the Rocks (an artificial island made from shipwrecked stones) → in the afternoon, explore St. Tryphon Cathedral and Cat Alley in the Old Town of Kotor.
Day 3: Budva and Sveti Stefan
In the morning, head to Budva and wander through the 15th-century walled town with its three historic churches. Spend the afternoon swimming at the beach. In the afternoon, drive 20 minutes to the Sveti Stefan viewpoint to overlook the sandy spit hotel area connecting the small island to the mainland (island entry requires advance booking). Watch the sunset at Jaz Beach in the evening.
Day 4: Cetinje: A Day in the Former Royal Capital
Drive up the winding old mountain road to visit King Nikola’s Palace, the National Museum, and the Blue Palace. Learn about the era of prince-bishops at the birthplace of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. For those interested, continue to Lovćen National Park and climb the 461 stone steps to Njegoš’s Mausoleum, where you can see both the Adriatic Sea and Lake Skadar on a clear day. Stay overnight in Cetinje or return to Kotor.
Days 5–6: Durmitor National Park
- Day 5: Pass by Ostrog Monastery (a white complex built into a cliff; dress modestly) → arrive in Žabljak and check into a mountain guesthouse.
- Day 6: Hike around Black Lake (Crno jezero) in the early morning (about 1.5 hours); the lake reflects the dense forest and snow-capped mountains. In the afternoon, drive to the Tara River Canyon Bridge — a concrete arch bridge built in 1937 and the real-life setting for the 1969 Yugoslav film “Bridge.” You can also go rafting on the Tara River (half-day trip, approximately 40–60 euros, one of the most thrilling rafting rivers in Europe).
Day 7: Wrap Up at Lake Skadar
Head south to the town of Virpazar, take a boat into Lake Skadar National Park for birdwatching (pelicans and herons), and return to Podgorica in the afternoon. Visit the Millennium Bridge and the Christ’s Resurrection Cathedral before departing.
Tips
- The roads in Durmitor are winding with frequent fog; allow double the driving time if self-driving, and book mountain guesthouses in advance.
- Cash is preferred for city wall and national park tickets, but cards are accepted. Carry 5–10 euros in small bills.
- Rafting bookings for July and August should be made at least one week in advance. Water is cold in May and June, so wear a wetsuit.
