Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
This long-distance itinerary weaves together the capital’s culture, coastal surfing, and pristine rainforest, offering the most comprehensive way to experience Liberia.

Itinerary Overview

D1-D2 Monrovia → D3-D4 Robertsport (Senge Beach) → D5-D6 Sapo National Park → D7 Return to Monrovia for departure. Road conditions in Liberia are limited; intercity travel is best done by private car with ample time allowed, preferably during daylight hours.

D1 Arrival in Monrovia

Arrive at Roberts International Airport (ROB) and transfer to your hotel in the city center, about a 1-hour drive. Stroll along Monrovia’s seaside in the evening to adjust to the time difference and humid climate. For dinner, try local cassava cake and palm oil stew.

D2 Monrovia City Exploration

In the morning, visit Providence Island, considered the landing site of free African-American settlers in 1822 and the starting point of Liberia’s founding. Then tour the National Museum to learn about the country’s history, followed by a visit to the Waterside Market to experience local life. In the evening, head to the fish market for fresh seafood.

D3 Monrovia to Robertsport

Drive north along the West African coastal road, about a 2- to 3-hour journey. Robertsport is a well-known coastal town in Liberia, and Senge Beach attracts surfers from around the world with its consistent waves. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach and observing the local surfing culture.

D4 Surfing at Senge Beach

Spend the whole day at Senge Beach: surf in the morning (you can rent a board or hire an instructor in town), visit the cape and lighthouse area in the afternoon, and enjoy grilled fish at a beachside shack in the evening. This is the most resort-like spot in Liberia.

D5 Robertsport to Sapo National Park Area

Head southeast toward Sapo National Park, traveling through the edge of West Africa’s pristine rainforest. Road conditions are poor, so a 4x4 vehicle is essential, and bring enough water and food.

D6 Rainforest Hiking in Sapo

Take a guided hike through the rainforest, spotting primates, forest elephants, and a variety of birds while experiencing West Africa’s rare lowland rainforest. Wear long sleeves and pants, carry mosquito repellent, follow your guide’s instructions at all times, and return to camp before dark.

D7 Return to Monrovia for Departure

Depart early in the morning to return to Monrovia, allowing plenty of time for the road conditions. In the evening, head to the airport for your departure. If time permits, shop for souvenirs such as wood carvings and woven fabrics in the city.

Tips

  • Contact the management and guides of Sapo National Park in advance; the park often closes during the rainy season due to road conditions.
  • Hire local drivers familiar with the roads for intercity travel and avoid driving at night.
  • Carry enough cash, as card payments and ATM withdrawals are difficult along the way.
