In the afternoon, visit Galle Face Green to watch the Indian Ocean sunset, explore Gangaramaya Temple and the National Museum of Colombo, and enjoy local curry rice for dinner near the Dutch Hospital or Pettah Market.

Day 2: Sigiriya & Dambulla – Rock Fortresses & Cave Temples

Drive to Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle early in the morning. First, visit the five cave temples and golden Buddha statues at Dambulla Cave Temple. In the afternoon, hike up Sigiriya Rock Fortress to see the ruins of the ancient royal palace and frescoes at the summit—the best views are at sunset. Stay overnight in Sigiriya or Habarana.

Day 3: Kandy – Temple of the Tooth & Lake City

Head to Kandy in the morning. Visit Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and catch the evening puja ceremony for the most atmospheric experience. In the afternoon, explore Kandy Market or watch a traditional Kandyan dance performance. If visiting in July or August, you might also witness the grand Esala Perahera procession.

Day 4: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya – Scenic Tea Train

Take the iconic tea train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya in the morning, passing through lush tea plantations, misty hills, and valleys—this is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous railway journeys. In the afternoon, visit a tea factory to learn about Ceylon tea production and enjoy a tasting. Stroll around Gregory Lake in the evening.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya to Ella – Cloud Forests & Nine Arch Bridge

Start the day with a hike up Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic views of the cloud forest and sunrise. Then take the train or drive to Ella. Hike to the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Spice Garden. In the evening, relax at a café in Ella town with views over the valley.

Day 6: Yala National Park – Wildlife Safari

Depart early in the morning from Ella or Tissamaharama for a 4x4 jeep safari in Yala National Park. Spot leopards, elephants, peacocks, and sambar deer. In the afternoon, visit the Buddhist stupas by Tissamaharama Lake.

Day 7: Mirissa & Galle – Beaches & Historic Fort

Spend the morning in Mirissa, relaxing on the beach, surfing, or joining a whale-watching tour (whale season runs from November to April). In the afternoon, head to Galle and wander the UNESCO-listed fortifications of Galle Fort. Visit the Dutch Reformed Church and the lighthouse, then watch the sunset from the ramparts.

Day 8: Galle back to Colombo – Coastal Train Ride

Take the famous coastal train from Galle to Colombo in the morning—this scenic rail route runs along the ocean and is often called one of the most beautiful coastal trains in the world. In the afternoon, shop for Ceylon tea and souvenirs in Colombo before heading to the airport for departure.

Tips

  • For the tea train, reserve first- or second-class seats in advance—the seats on the ocean or mountain side offer better views.
  • Book a 4x4 jeep for the Yala morning safari at least one day ahead; departures are around 5 AM.
  • Private drivers often double as guides, helping with tickets and meal arrangements. Fees are usually charged per day.
