Almaty is Kazakhstan’s tourism hub. The city itself is livable and comfortable, and within a one- to three-hour drive are snow-capped mountains, lakes, and canyons. For a short trip, there’s no need to visit other cities—just dedicate one day to each of the four directions.
Ascension Cathedral and Panfilov Park → Green Bazaar (for fruits, dried fruits, and horse sausage) → Arbat Pedestrian Street and cafes in the Old Town → climb Kok-Tobe Hill in the evening for sunset and the city’s light display, with a small zoo and Ferris wheel at the top.
Take a private car to Big Almaty Lake (passport required at the checkpoint). The lake water changes color with the light. On the way back, stop by Medeo Skating Rink, then take the Shymbulak Cable Car up to around 3,200 meters altitude—lush alpine meadows in summer, snowy ski slopes in winter.
Set off early to Charyn Canyon. First walk the Castle Valley Trail, then head to the viewpoint for a panoramic look at the entire canyon. The drive is about 200 km. Return to Almaty in the evening, with a possible stop at a grassland viewpoint for photos along the way.
Leave early in the morning for the Kolsay Lakes and Kaindy Lake, which are close to each other and can be visited together. Kolsay Lake is great for lakeside hiking, while Kaindy Lake features an underwater spruce forest—you’ll need to hike down a steep slope, so wear shoes with good grip. Return to the city in the evening and catch an evening flight out.
