Grande Comore is the main island and gateway to the Comoros, with Moroni as its hub. Volcanoes, coastlines, and spice plantations are all within a day’s drive, making it ideal for a short but immersive trip.
Visit the Old Friday Mosque and its minaret → stroll through Arabic-style old streets → explore the harbor market → browse ylang-ylang and spice shops. Watch the sunset by the seaside in the evening and enjoy coconut fish stew and grilled seafood.
Set out early in the morning for a guided hike up Karthala Volcano, ascending to the crater rim for panoramic views of the massive crater and the entire island. The hike takes about a full day—bring water, sun protection, and a light jacket.
Drive along the coastal road, visit black sand beaches and lava formations, and tour ylang-ylang, vanilla, and clove plantations to learn about the island’s spice industry and traditions.
Spend the morning swimming or snorkeling at the beach. Return to Moroni in the afternoon to shop for more spices and handicrafts before heading to the airport for departure.
Grande Comore’s ring road connects Moroni, the airport, and major towns. Hiring a private car is the most convenient option—the daily rate depends on the route and duration. Taxis in town usually don’t use meters, so agree on a fare before getting in. Accommodation options in Moroni are limited, mainly small and mid-sized hotels and guesthouses; book in advance during peak season. It’s recommended to stay near the volcano’s base the night before the hike for an early start. Moroni Airport is about a 20–30 minute drive from the city center. Complete visa-on-arrival procedures as soon as you arrive. Street lighting is limited on the island, so try to return to your accommodation before dark.
