Travel Guide to Getting Around Kiribati: International Connections, Inter-Island Flights, and Local Transport
Transport Guide 2026-10-03 1 views
Few international flights, irregular inter-island ferry schedules, and limited atoll roads are key factors in planning travel in Kiribati—be sure to research these well in advance.

Arrival and Transit

Kiribati’s main international gateway is Bonriki International Airport (TRW) in Tarawa, usually reached via a connection in Nadi, Fiji, with some flights also connecting through Brisbane, Australia, or the Solomon Islands. Cassidy International Airport (CXI) on Christmas Island is primarily served by flights from Honolulu and Nadi. International flights are extremely limited, so it’s advisable to book several months in advance and allow extra time for connections.

Inter-Island Transport

  • Inter-Island Flights: There are flights between the Gilbert Islands and some outer islands, but schedules are irregular and flights are often cancelled or delayed due to weather or mechanical issues.
  • Cargo Ships and Ferries: Cargo ships are the main means of supplying outer islands, with departure times varying based on cargo and weather conditions—you’ll need to confirm with local agents.
  • No Direct Flights Between Tarawa and Christmas Island: You must connect via Nadi, Fiji, or Honolulu, USA.

Local Transport

In South Tarawa, there is one main road where public minibuses and taxis operate. Fares are low, but services are limited in terms of frequency and routes. In North Tarawa, roads are narrower, so it’s best to hire a car or arrange for a local guide. There are no ride-hailing services, and car rental options are scarce. Motorcycles and bicycles are used by some residents.

Booking and Transit Tips

With very few international and inter-island flights available, it’s recommended to book your Kiribati trip in two parts—international and inter-island segments—and allow at least one full night for transit layovers in Nadi or Brisbane. Be aware of transit or entry requirements for countries like Fiji and Australia, as some routes may require a transit visa confirmed before departure. Seats on inter-island flights are limited and can sell out quickly during peak times, so book as early as possible once your dates are set.

Tips

  • Public transport and ferry tickets are cash-only—carry small denominations of Australian dollars.
  • Avoid packing your itinerary too tightly—leave plenty of buffer time for delays.
  • If your flight is cancelled, contact the airline and your accommodation provider to coordinate alternatives; rebooking may take several days.
