Kiribati 7-Day Classic Itinerary: Tarawa WWII Sites and Christmas Island Atoll
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Connect the Gilbert Islands’ Tarawa with the Line Islands’ Christmas Island for a journey that includes WWII battlefields and an in-depth exploration of the world’s largest coral atoll.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–3: Tarawa Atoll → Day 4: Flight to Christmas Island → Days 5–6: Christmas Island → Day 7: Departure. Please note: There are no direct flights between Tarawa and Christmas Island. Travel typically involves a connection via Nadi (Fiji) or Honolulu (USA). The itinerary should be adjusted according to flight schedules, and it is recommended to allow at least 2 buffer days.

Day 1: Arrival in Tarawa

After arriving at Bonriki International Airport, head to your accommodation on South Tarawa. Get familiar with the atoll environment near the causeway in the afternoon, and watch the sunset from the lagoon side in the evening. Kiribati is 4 hours behind UTC+8. On the first day, get plenty of rest and adjust to the humid climate.

Day 2: South Tarawa: WWII History and Capital Life

In the morning, visit the WWII sites on Betio, including Japanese coastal artillery, bunkers, and the U.S. landing memorial, to learn about the history of the 1943 Battle of Tarawa. In the afternoon, explore the government area, craft market, and docks in Bairiki to experience daily life on the capital island.

Day 3: North Tarawa: Atoll Village Culture

Travel by vehicle and on foot to villages such as Buariki, Abatao, and Naanibong on North Tarawa. Visit traditional maneaba meeting houses, watch weaving and dance performances, and go snorkeling on a deserted sandbank in the afternoon. With fewer people and beautiful scenery, North Tarawa is the best area to experience the village life of Kiribati.

Day 4: Flight to Christmas Island

Fly to Christmas Island (Kiritimati Island) via Nadi or Honolulu. After arrival, check into your resort. This atoll is one of the oldest coral atolls in the world and has the largest land area of any atoll globally. You’ll immediately notice the drier climate, which is different from Tarawa.

Day 5: Christmas Island Lagoon and Seabirds

In the morning, take a boat into the lagoon to observe seabirds and reef fish in the shallows. In the afternoon, visit Captain Cook’s landing site and the salt pan ruins to learn about the island’s recorded history by European navigators. The island is home to numerous seabird breeding grounds—please avoid disturbing the nests.

Day 6: Bonefishing and Atoll Exploration

Christmas Island is internationally recognized as a top destination for bonefishing. Go fishing on the salt flats with a guide, or choose alternative activities such as snorkeling, birdwatching, or canoeing in the lagoon. Pack up in the evening in preparation for departure the next day.

Day 7: Departure

Head to the airport according to your flight schedule and return via Nadi or Honolulu. Due to limited connecting flights, it is recommended to book international and inter-island flights separately and allow ample transit time.

Tips

  • There are no direct flights between Tarawa and Christmas Island. Be sure to confirm your connecting route and any transit visa requirements in advance.
  • Cash is the main form of payment throughout the trip. Bring enough Australian dollars in cash, as credit cards and ATMs are not available on the outer islands.
  • When fishing or snorkeling, follow the instructions of local guides to protect the coral and seabirds.
