Since September 2023, most foreign visitors holding a passport valid for at least six months can enter Kiribati visa-free for tourism or short visits, or to transit through the country, for a cumulative stay of up to 90 days within a 12-month period and a maximum of 30 days per single visit. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days on a single visit, you must apply for an extension in advance from the Kiribati Immigration Department, which can grant up to 60 additional days. Visa-free entry applies only to tourism and short visits; working, investing, studying, or conducting research in Kiribati requires applying for the appropriate visa in advance.
Upon arrival, carry your return or onward flight ticket and your Kiribati accommodation address, as airlines like Fiji Airways often check these before boarding. Passengers may bring in duty-free: 200 cigarettes or 225 grams of tobacco, and one bottle of alcohol not exceeding 1 liter (for those aged 21 and over). Cash amounts over 5,000 Australian dollars must be declared. Fruits, vegetables, and animal or plant products require import permits and quarantine certificates.

International flights to Kiribati are expensive and infrequent, so transportation usually makes up the largest part of your budget. It’s recommended to plan your airfare and inter-island flight costs separately and set aside extra funds for potential accommodation costs due to delays.
