Gambia is a narrow country along the river, with its main holiday facilities concentrated on the western coastline. This short trip centers around Banjul and the coastal resorts, branching out to nearby nature reserves and fishing villages. By exploring one area per day, you can avoid exhausting travel. The following itinerary is ideal for a 3-night, 4-day trip with a relaxed pace, and can also serve as the first half of a 7-day longer journey.
After arrival, head to Banjul to visit Albert Market, Arch 22, and the Gambia National Museum to learn about the country’s history and colonial architecture. In the evening, watch the sunset on the beach at the river mouth. Accommodation options include Banjul itself or the eastern areas of Kololi and Bakau, where hotels and restaurants are more concentrated.
Spend the morning relaxing on the beaches of Kololi and Bakau, or join a nearby boat tour and birdwatching excursion. In the afternoon, explore the markets and craft shops in the Senegambia area. In the evening, enjoy local music and dining. This area is also the most convenient for currency exchange, buying SIM cards, and booking tours.
In the morning, visit the Abuko Nature Reserve to observe birds and monkeys. This forest, not far from the coast, is one of the easiest birdwatching spots in Gambia. In the afternoon, go to the Tanji fishing village and nearby wetlands to experience village life and spot waterbirds. Return to the beach area in the evening.
In the morning, take a boat tour in the Gambia River estuary or a mangrove cruise to see birds and hippos. In the afternoon, depending on your flight time, pack up and head to the airport for departure. If you have extra time, consider visiting the craft market in Brikama or going birdwatching again around Tanji.
The Kololi and Bakau area offers a full range of accommodations, from guesthouses to beach resorts. The dry season (November to May) is peak travel time, so it’s recommended to book in advance. Dining mainly consists of local restaurants and seafood, with reasonable per-person costs. Joining half-day tours or hiring a private car is the most hassle-free way to explore, and prices are best agreed upon in advance.
