Experience Colombia’s highlights in one seamless journey: the highland ancient capital, UNESCO-listed coffee landscapes, the reborn Spring City, and the Caribbean’s historic gem.
Itinerary Overview
Days 1–2: Bogotá → Days 3–4: Coffee Cultural Landscape (Salento) → Days 5–6: Medellín → Days 7–8: Cartagena. Domestic flights between cities take about 1–1.5 hours total, making this Colombia’s most well-established route. The sequence can also be reversed (Cartagena first, then Bogotá), depending on your international flight entry and exit cities.
Days 1–2: Bogotá – The Highland Ancient Capital
- Day 1: Arrive at El Dorado Airport (BOG) → Explore La Candelaria: Bolívar Square and street murals → Visit the Gold Museum to see Muisca gold artifacts → Take a cable car up Monserrate Mountain in the evening for sunset views.
- Day 2: Take a day trip to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (an awe-inspiring underground church), or visit Bolívar Park and the Botanical Garden in the city. Enjoy a bowl of ajiaco chicken soup at a traditional restaurant in La Candelaria in the evening.
Days 3–4: Coffee Cultural Landscape – UNESCO Heritage Estates
- Day 3: Fly to Armenia (AXM) → Check into a coffee estate → In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of the estate: experience the full process of bean picking, husking, roasting, and cupping, and take home a bag of beans you roasted yourself.
- Day 4: Hike through the Cocora Valley starting from Salento to see 60-meter-tall wax palms (the tallest palms in the world). If you’re up for it, take the valley loop trail. Return to the estate in the evening for pour-over coffee and stargazing.
Days 5–6: Medellín – The Eternal Spring City
- Day 5: Fly to Medellín (MDE) → Take the metro and then the city’s cable cars up the mountains for panoramic rooftop views → In the afternoon, join a guided graffiti tour in Comuna 13 (make sure to go with a certified guide) to learn about the city’s story of renewal.
- Day 6: Take a day trip to Guatapé (climb the 650 steps to the top of the rock) and the colorful nearby town. In the evening, have dinner in the El Poblado district and catch a salsa or tango performance.
Days 7–8: Cartagena – A Caribbean Finale
- Day 7: Fly to Cartagena (CTG) → Explore the old city walls and colonial center: the Clock Tower and Plaza de los Dulces. Watch the sunset from the monastery viewpoint in the evening.
- Day 8: Spend the morning snorkeling around the Rosario Islands or relaxing at a café in the old town → Departure.
Tips
- For domestic flights, book in advance on the Avianca or LATAM websites. Flights to and from Bogotá tend to get more expensive during peak seasons.
- Try to visit the Cocora Valley and the Salt Cathedral on weekdays, as weekends tend to be crowded with locals.
- Cartagena is hot and humid, so bring plenty of sun protection and stay hydrated. Highland cities get cool at night, so pack a fleece or light jacket.
