Cameroon 7-Day Classic Route: Douala – Kribi – Yaoundé – Bafoussam and Foumban Ancient Capitals
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
From a port city to volcanic ash coasts and inland highlands, then into the ancient capital of the Bamum Kingdom, this is a West-Central African classic route that combines seaside and cultural experiences, ideal for about a week of immersive travel.

Route Overview

Day 1: Douala → Days 2–3: Kribi → Days 4–5: Yaoundé → Day 6: Bafoussam and Foumban → Day 7: Return. The itinerary focuses on the relatively stable central-southern region of Cameroon, connected by road and domestic transport. The drive from Douala to Kribi takes about 3 hours, Kribi to Yaoundé about 4 hours, and Yaoundé to Foumban in the west about 5 hours. It is recommended to arrange private transfers by segment and avoid nighttime driving.

Day 1: Douala – The Economic Capital and Port City

Upon arrival in Douala, explore the Bonanjo and Bonapriso districts in the city center to experience the blend of colonial-era architecture and modern urban life. Visit the Douala Museum and take a stroll along the Wouri River. In the evening, try grilled fish (poisson braisé) with chili sauce and fried plantains at a local restaurant. Douala is Cameroon’s economic hub, known for its bustling markets and vibrant nightlife.

Day 2–3: Kribi – Beaches and Waterfalls Meeting the Sea

Drive to the southern coastal city of Kribi. It features long stretches of white sandy beaches and the famous Chutes de la Lobé (Lobé Waterfalls), which dramatically cascade directly into the Atlantic Ocean — a rare natural spectacle. You can take boat rides nearby, watch local fishermen at work, and enjoy fresh seafood. Kribi has a relaxed pace and is perfect for staying overnight at a seaside hotel to watch the sunset over the ocean.

Day 4–5: Yaoundé – The Political Capital and Surroundings

Head to the capital city of Yaoundé. Visit the National Museum, Mvog-Betsi Zoo, and the administrative buildings in the city center to experience the hilly landscape of the “City of Seven Hills.” You can also set aside half a day to visit a nearby monastery and craft villages to learn about traditional wood carving and weaving. Yaoundé sits at a higher altitude and enjoys a cooler climate than Douala, making it a great place to relax and recharge.

Day 6: Bafoussam and Foumban – Ancient Capitals of the Bamum Kingdom

Travel to the western city of Bafoussam, a region mainly inhabited by the Bamileke people and known for its plateau agriculture and handicrafts. Continue to Foumban to visit the Sultan’s Palace of the Bamum Kingdom and the adjacent museum, which houses exquisite masks, carvings, royal regalia, and textiles. This is one of the most important sites to explore Cameroon’s traditional art.

Day 7: Return

Return from Foumban or Bafoussam to Yaoundé or Douala, depending on your flight arrangements for departure. If time permits, consider stopping by the Western Highlands en route to see volcanic lakes and terraced fields.

Safety and Alternatives

The black sand beaches around Limbe and Buea in the southwest, as well as hiking opportunities near Mount Cameroon, are attractive, but this area is predominantly English-speaking and requires extra attention to safety conditions. If you plan to go, confirm the local situation first and follow official guidance. Do not enter areas with uncertain security situations.

Tips

  • For long-distance routes, it is advisable to hire a private car and travel in segments to avoid nighttime driving.
  • Seafood in Kribi is very fresh—choose restaurants with more customers for better assurance.
  • When visiting palaces, observe local etiquette and ask for permission before taking photos.
