Itineraries 2026-10-02 1 views 8 days
Connect three iconic cities and two majestic alpine peaks, taking in the Alps in full with the GoldenPass, cogwheel railways, and the Glacier Express.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Zurich → Day 2: Lucerne → Day 3: Lucerne to Interlaken → Day 4: Jungfrau Region → Day 5: Interlaken to Zermatt → Day 6: Zermatt → Day 7: Glacier Express to St. Moritz or return to Zurich → Day 8: Departure. The entire journey relies on trains and cogwheel railways, making the Swiss Travel Pass the most convenient option.

Day 1: Zurich

Stroll along Bahnhofstrasse and the Old Town (Niederdorf) → Enjoy views over the Limmat River and the Old Town from Lindenhof Hill → Take a boat cruise on Lake Zurich → Dine by the lake or in Zurich West in the evening. Art lovers can visit the Kunsthaus Zurich to see works by Edvard Munch and Alberto Giacometti.

Day 2: Lucerne

See the Chapel Bridge and the octagonal Water Tower → Visit the Lion Monument → Explore the Musegg Wall → Take a Lake Lucerne cruise, with optional hikes up Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi. Lucerne’s Old Town is compact and best explored on foot.

Day 3: Lucerne to Interlaken

Ride the GoldenPass train through the Brünig Pass to Interlaken, passing lakes, grassy slopes, and wooden chalet villages. Upon arrival, head to the Harder Kulm viewpoint for panoramic views of the valley between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Take an evening stroll around Interlaken town.

Day 4: Jungfrau Region

Travel from Interlaken via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and transfer to the Jungfrau Railway, reaching the Jungfraujoch saddle (approximately 3,454 meters), where you can see the Aletsch Glacier and the Ice Palace. If the weather is poor, consider visiting the cliff walk at First in Grindelwald or the Schilthorn peak.

Day 5: Interlaken to Zermatt

Transfer via Spiez and Visp to Zermatt. This car-free town is accessible only by train, offering crisp mountain air and rows of traditional wooden chalets. In the evening, take a walk along the main street and admire the view of the Matterhorn.

Day 6: Zermatt

Take the Gornergrat cogwheel railway early in the morning for classic pyramid views of the Matterhorn. In the afternoon, ride the cable car to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, which offers snow activities year-round. Alternatively, hike the Five Lakes Walk, capturing reflections of the Matterhorn on the water. Return to town in the evening for a fondue dinner.

Day 7: Glacier Express

Ride the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz, a scenic journey of about 8 hours that crosses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. Reservations are required in advance, along with a seat reservation fee. If time is limited, consider taking a train back to Zurich or Geneva via Visp.

Day 8: Departure

Depart from St. Moritz, Zurich, or Geneva to your airport. If staying overnight in St. Moritz, consider spending half a day exploring the Engadin Valley and lakeside areas.

Tips

  • Tickets for the Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat, and Glacier Express can be in high demand during peak season, so book several weeks in advance.
  • Temperatures at the summits can be more than fifteen degrees colder than at lower elevations, so bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and sunglasses.
  • The Glacier Express requires mandatory seat reservations, and even with a Swiss Travel Pass, a reservation fee applies.
