Classic 7-Day Congo (Brazzaville) Route: Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire & the Loango Coast
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Focusing mainly on the relatively safer southern region, this itinerary links the riverside charm of the capital, an oil port, and the forested Loango coast. With a relaxed pace and high feasibility, it’s ideal for first-time visitors.

Itinerary Overview

D1–D3 Brazzaville → D4 Loango Coast → D5–D6 Pointe-Noire → D7 Depart from Pointe-Noire. This route covers the southern and coastal areas, avoiding the northern region and border zones—a more secure option under current conditions. Travel between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire is possible by plane (about one hour) or train, though overland routes take longer and have unstable road conditions. Flights are recommended to save time for the destinations themselves.

D1–D3 Brazzaville: Riverside and Sapou

  • D1: Arrive in Brazzaville, check in, and exchange currency. In the evening, stroll along the north bank of the Congo River and admire the skyline of Kinshasa across the water to adjust to the equatorial climate and local rhythm.
  • D2: Visit large markets and craft streets in the morning to experience the trading of cassava, bananas, and palm oil. In the afternoon, observe fashion culture in Sapou, a district popular with local gentlemen—always ask for permission before taking photos. In the evening, visit music bars to enjoy live Congolese rumba and soukous.
  • D3: Tour museums and cultural centers to learn about the history of the Kingdom of Congo and the colonial era. In the afternoon, try a stew of cassava leaves and peanut sauce, then shop for supplies needed for the trip to the coast and prepare for the next day’s flight.

D4 Loango: Coast and Mangroves

Fly from Brazzaville to Pointe-Noire, then transfer to Loango, which features coastal lagoons, mangroves, and beaches. The Conkouati-Douli National Park in the Loango area is known for its mix of beaches, forests, and wildlife, making it a great spot for a day of nature activities. Whether going out to sea, birdwatching, or hiking, always go with a local guide and confirm weather and safety conditions in advance. Never venture alone into unmanned coastal or forest areas.

D5–D6 Pointe-Noire: Oil Port City

Pointe-Noire, the second-largest city in Congo (Brazzaville) and an oil port, offers attractions such as the waterfront, local markets, and dining hubs. Plan a half-day coastal tour, and in the evening, enjoy grilled fish and seafood at a beachfront restaurant. If time allows, add a nearby beach or short excursion to the suburbs. The city has a more relaxed pace than the capital, making it a good place to slow down or wind down at the end of your trip.

D7 Departure

Pointe-Noire has an international airport with connecting flights for your return. Before leaving, ensure your cash does not exceed declaration limits and declare it as required. Allow ample time for check-in and confirm baggage through-check arrangements for your next flight.

Tips

  • To visit Odzala-Kokoua National Park to see western lowland gorillas, arrange a separate charter flight and camp package, and confirm the security situation and operational status in advance.
  • The train between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire has limited services and takes a long time; those with tight schedules are advised to fly directly.
  • Avoid nighttime driving on both north-south routes. When traveling long distances, go with companions, share contact details, and stay in touch at all times.
