Connecting Maun and Kasane, this classic safari route links the Delta, salt pans, and Chobe’s elephant herds, offering one of Botswana’s most iconic overland experiences.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Arrive in Maun → Days 2–4: Okavango Delta → Day 5: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans → Days 6–7: Chobe National Park → Day 8: Depart from Kasane or transfer to Victoria Falls. The itinerary centers on Maun and Kasane, with connections primarily by small aircraft and 4x4 vehicles.
Day 1: Arrival in Maun
Arrive in Maun, the gateway town to the Okavango Delta. Stock up on supplies and arrange safari activities here. In the evening, take a stroll along the Thamalakane River.
Days 2–4: Okavango Delta
- Day 2: Fly or take a motorboat into a Delta camp. In the afternoon, glide through waterways by mokoro (dugout canoe) to spot birds.
- Day 3: Spend the day wildlife viewing in Moremi Game Reserve, searching for elephants, giraffes, lion prides, and waterbuck.
- Day 4: Go on a morning walk or game drive, then return to Maun for your onward journey.
Day 5: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
Head to the Makgadikgadi Pans, a vast, otherworldly expanse of salt flats. Explore the terrain by 4x4, and in the dry season, spot flocks of flamingos and waterbirds. Optional: Connect with a San (Bushman) guide to learn about local culture and stargazing.
Days 6–7: Chobe National Park
- Day 6: Fly or drive to Kasane and enter Chobe National Park. Take a boat cruise along the Chobe River to observe elephants and hippos along the water’s edge.
- Day 7: Enjoy a full day of game drives. Chobe is home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world, and in the dry season, you can see large herds gathering near water.
Day 8: Kasane & Departure
Spend the morning relaxing in Kasane or taking an additional Chobe River cruise. Depart from Kasane Airport or continue your journey to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side.
Accommodation & Transfers
Delta and Chobe accommodations are mostly camps, often offering all-inclusive packages (meals and two activities per day) at premium rates. Book well in advance during peak season. Inter-camp transfers are typically by small plane with strict luggage weight limits, and schedules may be affected by weather—allow extra time for connections.
Tips
- Delta and Chobe camps fill up quickly in peak season; book months ahead and confirm your flight connections.
- Always follow your guide’s instructions in protected areas—never exit your vehicle or approach wildlife.
- Some roads and Delta activities may be limited during the rainy season. Check water levels and road conditions before you go.
