The cities in southern Benin are close together with good road conditions, making it ideal for a short trip. Based in Cotonou, the itinerary covers two classic destinations — the Ganvié floating village and Ouidah — while also leaving time to experience the daily life of a port city. The route stays within the southern region, where safety risks are relatively manageable, and transport and accommodation are also quite convenient.
Check in upon arrival, then explore Dantokpa Market and Place des Héros (Red Star Square) in the afternoon to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of this West African port city. Take an evening stroll along the waterfront and enjoy grilled fish, grilled chicken, and local beer to settle into your trip.
Take an early boat to Ganvié Floating Village to see the floating market, stilt houses, and the local fishing lifestyle. Known as the “Venice of West Africa,” it is on the UNESCO Tentative List. Return to Cotonou in the afternoon and stop by Cotonou Cathedral and the craft center to browse wooden carvings and textiles.
Head to Ouidah and walk along the Route of Slaves to the “Door of No Return” (Porte du Non-Retour) by the sea. Visit the memorial sculptures and history museum along the way. In the afternoon, you can go to the Python Temple to learn about the origins of Vodun culture. This is one of the most important sites for understanding the transatlantic slave trade and the memory of the African diaspora — please remain respectful. Return to Cotonou in the afternoon or stay overnight in Ouidah.
Spend the morning revisiting markets or heading to Porto-Novo to visit museums and colonial-era architecture. In the afternoon, pack up and head to the airport for departure. If time allows, you can spend an extra half day in Cotonou enjoying the seaside and the craft market.
