Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
From water villages and the Slave Route to palaces and nature reserves, explore Benin’s coastal civilization and northern wilderness along this route.

Route Overview

Days 1–2: Cotonou & Ganvié → Day 3: Ouidah Slave Route → Day 4: Abomey Royal Palaces → Days 5–6: Natitingou & Pendjari National Park → Day 7: Return to Cotonou for departure. Road conditions are better between southern cities, while the northern reserve itinerary requires a guided tour with security.

Day 1: Arrive in Cotonou

Check in upon arrival in Cotonou, then visit Dantokpa Market in the afternoon, one of West Africa’s largest markets. In the evening, take a stroll around Red Star Square and the seaside area to experience the vibrancy of this port city.

Day 2: Ganvié Water Village

Take a boat from Cotonou to Ganvié, a water village on Lake Nokoué. Observe locals traveling by boat, visiting floating markets, and living in stilt houses. Known as the “Venice of West Africa,” this village is on the UNESCO Tentative List. It’s best to visit in the early morning for optimal lighting and fewer crowds.

Day 3: Ouidah: The Slave Route

Head to Ouidah and walk along the approximately four-kilometer Slave Route to the “Door of No Return” on the coast. Along the way, you’ll find memorial sculptures and museums dedicated to the history of the slave trade. In the afternoon, visit the Python Temple to learn about the origins of Vodun culture. This is one of the most important sites for understanding the transatlantic slave trade and the memory of the African diaspora—please observe with respect.

Day 4: Abomey Royal Palaces

Travel to Abomey to visit the Royal Palaces of the Kingdom of Dahomey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the mud reliefs, royal thrones, and court artifacts, and listen to guides share the rise and fall of the kingdom and the story of its famous female army. The museum has an extensive collection, so plan for at least half a day.

Day 5–6: Natitingou & Pendjari National Park

Head north to Natitingou, where you can see the Tata Somba earthen dwellings in the Atakora Mountains. Then enter Pendjari National Park for a wildlife safari, searching for elephants, hippos, antelopes, lions, and other animals. This area is near the border, and security risks have increased in recent years. Be sure to join a reputable, security-accompanied tour, follow your guide’s instructions, stay with the group, and avoid approaching the border areas.

Day 7: Return & Departure

Return to Cotonou for rest, do some last-minute market browsing or souvenir shopping, then head to the airport for departure.

Tips

  • Between southern cities, you can hire a private car or take a shared taxi; for the northern reserve itinerary, a full guided tour with security is recommended.
  • When visiting historical sites or Vodun-related places, respect local culture and beliefs, and ask for permission before taking photos.
  • The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing in the reserves. Bring mosquito repellent, long-sleeved clothing, and plenty of water.
