Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Connect Africa’s film capital, music city, waterfalls, rock formations, and UNESCO-listed ancient stone walls into one loop: seven days covering Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso, Banfora, and Loropéni, all within the safer southwestern region.

Itinerary Overview

D1–D2 Ouagadougou → D3–D4 Bobo-Dioulasso → D5 Banfora → D6 Gaoua & Loropéni → D7 Return to Ouagadougou for departure. The entire route stays within the relatively stable central-western and southwestern parts of the country, strictly avoiding the northern and eastern borders. City-to-city travel is by private car or intercity bus, with each leg kept under 4–5 hours.

D1–D2 Ouagadougou: Film Capital

  • D1: Arrive at Ouagadougou Airport, relax in the city → in the evening, explore Grand Marché (the main market) and Village Artisanal (artisan village), where you can shop for bronze statues and leather goods.
  • D2: In the morning, visit the ruins of the Mossi king’s palace and Ouagadougou Grand Mosque → in the afternoon, head to Laongo granite sculpture village on the outskirts to see massive stone artworks left by past international sculpture symposiums → in the evening, experience open-air movies and live music around the former site of the FESPACO Golden Stallion Cinema.

D3–D4 Bobo-Dioulasso: Music & Sahel Architecture

  • D3: Take an early bus or private car west for about 4 hours to reach Bobo-Dioulasso → visit the Sudanese-Sahel style Grand Mosque (a century-old building made of adobe) → explore the artisan quarter of the Senufo people in the old town to see dyeing and pottery crafts.
  • D4: In the morning, visit the Museum of Music (which showcases various traditional instruments from West Africa) → in the afternoon, experience performances on the balafon and djembe drums with local musicians → in the evening, catch a live Bobo jazz session at a downtown music venue.

D5 Banfora: Waterfalls & Rock Formations

Travel south for about 1 hour to Banfora. Visit the Karfiguéla Waterfalls (best after the rainy season, with a cliff-top viewpoint for panoramic views), the Fairy Rock Formations, and Lake Taffara. In the evening, go to Lake Tougoula, where you can take a canoe trip to observe hippos up close (always go with a local guide and maintain a safe distance).

D6 Gaoua & Loropéni

Head southwest to Gaoua, the capital of the Lobi region, and visit the Lobi Ethnographic Museum. Then proceed to the Loropéni stone wall ruins. Walk along wooden boardwalks around the ancient stone walls and settlement remains to understand the strategic fortress layout of West Africa’s ancient gold trade routes. Overnight in Gaoua or return to Banfora.

D7 Departure

Take a private car back to Ouagadougou via Bobo-Dioulasso (about 5–6 hours). Depending on your schedule, you may have time to revisit the National Museum before departing in the evening.

Tips

  • This itinerary avoids the northern, northeastern, and eastern border areas. Do not deviate to regions north of Ouahigouya or east of Fada N’Gourma.
  • Try to choose daytime intercity travel and arrive at your accommodation before dark.
  • Hire licensed guides and drivers, and share your itinerary with an emergency contact registered with your embassy.
