Classic 7-day Bosnia and Herzegovina itinerary: Sarajevo – Jajce – Mostar – Kravice Waterfall
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
A single route covering the meeting point of Eastern and Western cultures: Olympic mountain city Sarajevo, Latin Bridge, Mostar’s iconic bridge diving, and the city-center waterfall in Jajce. A relaxed pace with rich content, no rushing.

Itinerary Overview

D1–D3 Sarajevo → D3 via Travnik and Jajce → D4–D6 Mostar → D7 return to Sarajevo. Intercity buses are well-developed, and there’s also a scenic train between Sarajevo and Mostar.

D1–D3 Sarajevo: City Where East Meets West

  • D1: After arrival, explore the Old Town — Pigeon Square and Sebilj Fountain in Baščaršija, Copper Street, and Gazi Husrev-beg’s Caravanserai. In the evening, enjoy Bosnian coffee with Turkish delight at Latedžizija.
  • D2: Morning visit to the Latin Bridge and the 1914 Assassination Museum → Sarajevo Meeting Church and the 1914 War Children’s Memorial → afternoon cable car ride up Mount Trebević, hiking along the abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track, with panoramic views of the city’s minaret skyline.
  • D3: Morning tour of the “Tunnel of Hope” (the only supply route during the siege) and the source park of the Bosnia River at Fojnica; afternoon trip to Travnik (colorful mosque and Ivo Andrić’s House), then stay overnight in Jajce.

D3 Evening – D4 Jajce

Watch the Pliva River Waterfall at dawn — a rare “city-center waterfall” in Europe, where the river drops over 20 meters into a canyon at the edge of the Old Town. Also visit the Katakombe Tombs and the medieval fortress. In the afternoon, take a bus south to Mostar (about 2.5 hours).

D4–D6 Mostar and Surroundings

  • D4: Stari Most (Old Bridge) and the Kujundžiluk market on both sides of the river. In the afternoon, watch the bridge-diving club leap from the 22-meter platform into the Neretva River (only licensed locals dive; visitors can just watch).
  • D5: Morning trip to Blagaj — the Tekke Monastery perched above a clear spring, with Bosnia’s most photogenic “water houses.” Afternoon visit to Počitelj Stone Town to see Ottoman-era terraced fortress residences.
  • D6: Take a private car or join a half-day tour to Kravice Waterfall, swim or have a picnic by the turquoise pools, then return to Mostar’s Old Town for dinner in the evening.

D7 Departure

Take a scenic train or bus back to Sarajevo in the morning (about 2.5 hours). In the afternoon, depart for your flight or continue to Croatia or Montenegro to extend your Balkan loop.

Tips

  • The Sarajevo–Mostar train runs multiple times daily, with the best views from the left-side window seats.
  • The entrance to the Tunnel of Hope is near the airport, a 15-minute bus or taxi ride away. The guided tour is highly recommended.
  • In July and August, the Old Town of Mostar gets very hot during the day. The bridge-diving shows mainly happen in the afternoon, and the morning is the least crowded for photos.
