A curated list of the nine most worthwhile attractions in Samoa, organized by island, with highlights and recommended visiting times.

Upolu Island

  • To Sua Ocean Trench: A volcanic rock collapse that forms a stunning seawater pool. Climb down the ladder into this natural swimming hole—a true icon of Samoa. (1–2 hours)
  • Lalomanu Beach: Pristine white sands on the southeastern coast, framed by swaying palms and gradient blue waters. Best experienced as an overnight stay. (Half day – 1 night)
  • Papase'ea Sliding Rocks: A series of three natural water slides—fun for everyone, locals included. (2 hours)
  • Vailima: The former residence of Robert Louis Stevenson, now a literary museum rich in Polynesian history. (1.5 hours)
  • Piula Cave Pool: An underground freshwater pool located within a theological college, featuring an underwater tunnel for exploration. (1–2 hours)

Savai'i Island

  • Alofaaga Blowholes: Waves crash through volcanic rock tubes, shooting dozens of meters into the air. Brave visitors can try tossing a coconut and watch it get launched skyward. (1–2 hours)
  • Saleaula Lava Field: Remnants of villages swallowed by volcanic eruptions in the 1900s, featuring black lava landscapes and a partially buried church. (1.5 hours)
  • Rainforest Waterfall Trail: Savai’i is dotted with inland waterfalls; select swim-friendly pools based on the season. (Half day)

Offshore Islands

  • Manono Island: A car-free island of traditional villages. Spend half a day snorkeling and experiencing village life for an authentic taste of Fa’a Samoa. (Half day – 1 day)

Planning Tips

Most of Upolu’s attractions are located along the ring road. A good approach is to dedicate one day to the southern coast, one to the east coast, and another to the town area and Vailima. On Savai’i, factor in at least half a day for travel and boat rides, and consider staying at least two nights. For village attractions, always pay your entry fee at the entrance or ticket booth. Choose high tide for snorkeling, ask villagers for permission before taking photos, and aiming for two or three spots per day will allow for a relaxed pace.
