Classic 7-Day Itinerary in Trinidad and Tobago: Port of Spain — Pitch Lake — Tobago Island-Hopping
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Cover both the cultural and resort islands in one trip: urban nightlife, birdwatching wetlands, Pitch Lake, and Tobago’s white-sand beaches — all included. The seven-day pace is well-balanced, ideal for first-time visitors looking for an in-depth experience.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–3: Trinidad Island (Port of Spain and surrounding areas) → Day 4: Fly to Tobago → Days 5–6: Tobago beaches and boat trips → Day 7: Return and depart. The flight between the two islands takes about 20 minutes; the ferry takes 2.5–3.5 hours. Flying is recommended for saving time and avoiding sea conditions.

Days 1–2: Port of Spain — City and Carnival Capital

  • Day 1: Arrive at Piarco Airport → Check in to accommodation in Port of Spain → Stroll through Queen’s Park Savannah → Dinner and drinks on Ariapita Avenue.
  • Day 2: Morning visit to experience Carnival and steelpan culture (steelpan yard session or Carnival museum) → Afternoon visit to the hilltop lookout for city views → Evening try curry crab for dinner.

Port of Spain’s old town and colonial architecture are concentrated around Queen’s Park. You can explore the area on foot in half a day. If you’re here on a Thursday evening, many steelpan bands offer open rehearsals — a great chance to experience the music up close.

Day 3: Wetlands and North Coast

Start early to visit the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. Take a flat-bottomed boat through the mangroves to see the stunning pink spectacle of thousands of scarlet ibises returning to their nests. In the afternoon, cross the Northern Range to Maracas Bay, enjoy a famous bake and shark sandwich, and watch surfers and the sunset. Sanctuary guided tours need to be booked a day in advance, and the dusk return of birds offers the best experience.

Day 4: Pitch Lake and Flight to Tobago

Head south in the morning to La Brea to visit Pitch Lake — the world’s largest natural asphalt lake. You can walk on the black surface, learn about the history of asphalt mining, and see fossilized tree trunks unearthed from the lake bottom. In the evening, take a small flight to Tobago. Pitch Lake is about a 1.5-hour drive from Port of Spain; renting a car or joining a half-day tour is recommended.

Days 5–6: Tobago — Beaches and Boat Trips

  • Day 5: White sands amid coconut palms at Buccoo Point → Snorkeling at Buccoo Reef → “Sand bath” at Nylon Pool (shallow water) → On Sundays, check out the Buccoo Sunday School street party in the evening.
  • Day 6: Rainforest hike on the east coast and Argyle Waterfall → Scarborough Fortress viewpoint → Seafood dinner.

Buccoo Reef snorkeling tours usually include boat transport, equipment, and a guide, lasting about three hours. The water at Nylon Pool is only knee-deep, and the fine sand has a natural massage effect — a gentle activity even suitable for children. Diving enthusiasts can book a half-day scuba diving trip. Tobago has a well-established English-language diving instruction system with courses for all levels.

Day 7: Departure

Enjoy some free time on the beach in the morning, then fly back to Port of Spain in the afternoon for your international flight. If your international flight departs directly from Tobago, the process will be more straightforward.

Tips

  • Baggage weight limits on small planes between Trinidad and Tobago are strict; larger luggage can be checked on the ferry.
  • Birdwatching trips require an early start, and the sunset bird-returning time at the Caroni Sanctuary offers the best experience.
  • The itinerary may need to be shifted earlier or later during Carnival to avoid conflicting with parades.
