Days 1–3: Dili city and surroundings → Days 4–5: Atauro Island → Day 6: Highland coffee region → Day 7: Departure from Dili. For longer stretches, private car hire or 4WD rental is recommended, with boat or speedboat transfers to Atauro Island.
Check into a city hotel after arriving at Dili International Airport. Stroll along the coastal promenade in the evening to watch the sunset and local fishing boats. For dinner, try grilled fish paired with a cup of Timorese coffee to ease into the laid-back pace.
In the morning, visit the Resistance Museum and Santa Cruz Cemetery to learn about Timor-Leste’s independence struggle. Have lunch at a local restaurant, then head to the Cristo Rei statue for views over the Timor Sea. Visit Areia Branca Beach for sunset and explore the seaside night market in the evening.
Travel to Liquiçá and Manatuto in the east, taking in the coastline, salt pans, and mangroves along the way. You can also opt for a half-day dolphin-watching tour. Return to Dili in the evening to rest up for the next day’s island trip.
Take a ~2-hour boat ride from Dili’s port to Atauro Island, known for its pristine coral reefs, clear waters, and traditional fishing villages. On Day 4, go snorkeling or diving to admire coral walls and tropical fish. On Day 5, hike island trails and visit handmade textile villages, then stargaze on the light-pollution-free coastline in the evening.
Return to Dili and head to the Maubisse and Ermera highlands, where cooler temperatures prevail at higher elevations. Visit coffee farms to see Arabica bean harvesting and sun-drying processes, and sample locally brewed coffee. Stay overnight in a highland homestay to enjoy the cool mountain air and scenic vistas, a stark contrast to the coast.
Watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds atop Mount Ramelau in the early morning, or explore nearby waterfalls and rice terraces. Return to Dili in the afternoon to shop for coffee and handwoven tais fabric as souvenirs before heading to the airport for departure.
