Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Cover the highlights of both islands: colonial Old Town, volcanic spires, crossing the equator, and the Príncipe Biosphere Reserve.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–4: São Tomé Island (Old Town culture + Southern Coast) → Days 5–6: Príncipe Island (reserve and beaches) → Day 7: Return and departure. Domestic flights are infrequent; book Príncipe flights before finalizing the itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival and São Tomé Old Town

Arrive at São Tomé International Airport in the afternoon and check into your hotel in the city. Stroll along the Baía Ana Chaves waterfront in the evening, see the Independence Square and the exterior of the Cathedral, and dine on the national dish, Calulu.

Day 2: Old Town and Plantation Culture Day

Visit colonial-era buildings in the morning: the Cathedral, the National Museum (São Sebastião Fortress), and 17th-century mansions. In the afternoon, head to the Monte Café coffee plantation and cocoa experimental station in the foothills to learn about the entire process from planting to roasting, and stop by the town of Trindade on the way back.

Day 3: Southern Coast Loop

Spend the day on a private car tour of the southern loop: start at the fishing village of São João dos Angolares → scenic cliffside ocean views along the way → visit the Pico Cão Grande (Big Dog Peak) viewpoint to see the 663-meter volcanic spire → swim in the natural pool at Praia Piscina → stay overnight at the small southern port of Porto Alegre.

Day 4: Equator Line Experience

Take a small boat to Ilhéu das Rolas, where you can straddle the equator at the monument; enjoy snorkeling on the island and climb the small lighthouse for views of the strait. Return to São Tomé City in the afternoon for rest.

Days 5–6: Príncipe Island: Quiet Paradise Core

  • Day 5: Take an early flight to Príncipe (about 35–40 minutes) → visit the town of Santo António (known as one of the smallest cities in the world) → explore Roça Belo Monte, an old plantation with a cocoa history exhibit → swim at Banana Beach.
  • Day 6: Hike through the rainforest in the southern section of Obô National Park (requires a certified guide; look for endemic birds and waterfalls), or join a biosphere reserve guided tour; watch the sunset from the pontoon at Bom Bom in the evening.

Day 7: Return and Departure

Fly back to São Tomé. Depending on your flight time, shop for souvenirs at the market (cocoa, chocolate, and coffee), then depart in the evening.

Tips

  • Some southern route sections are only accessible by 4WD vehicles and may be disrupted during the rainy season; confirm road conditions with your driver before departure.
  • Boat schedules to the Equator Monument vary with tides; book a licensed boat operator through your accommodation and wear a life jacket.
  • Lodging options on Príncipe are extremely limited and often fully booked; secure your room as soon as your flights are confirmed.
