Public transport in Dakar, ferries, and long-distance travel – understand how to get around Senegal before you go.
Arrival and Airport Transfers
Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), located about 45 kilometres east of the city centre, is the main international gateway. Taxis, airport shuttles, or pre-booked transfers can take you into the city, with journeys taking around 45–60 minutes. Airport taxis usually do not have meters, so agree on a fare before departure or arrange an airport pick-up through your hotel.
Getting Around Dakar
- BRT and Bus Services: Dakar’s BRT and bus systems, introduced in recent years, cover most urban areas, offering a convenient and affordable way to travel.
- Taxis: Taxis are readily available in the city, mostly yellow in colour. Always agree on a fare before getting in or make sure the taxi uses a meter.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: Taxi apps are available in Dakar and can help avoid price disputes, especially useful for travellers unfamiliar with local routes.
Inter-city Travel and Ferries
- Gorée Island Ferry: Ferry services between Dakar and Gorée Island are limited, so check the schedule in advance.
- Long-Distance Travel: Buses, shared cars, or private transfers are options for reaching places like Saint-Louis and Thiès from Dakar, though journeys may be long.
- Southern Casamance Region: Getting to Ziguinchor typically involves going through The Gambia or taking a longer route, with complex procedures and road conditions – it’s best to confirm details in advance.
Tips
- Avoid night travel for long-distance trips and allow plenty of time.
- Ask your hotel or locals for approximate taxi fares before starting to negotiate.
- Be mindful of your belongings on crowded ferries and buses, especially during peak hours.
Senegal’s transport system is mainly road-based. In Dakar, buses and taxis cover the urban area well, while inter-city travel relies on buses, shared cars, and private transfers. For trips to Gorée Island and Ziguinchor, pay attention to ferry and boat schedules, and aim to depart in the morning when possible. If driving, be aware of local road conditions and driving habits – long stretches are best travelled during the day.
