Classic 7-Day Route in San Marino: Mountain Town Exploration and Emilia-Romagna Ancient Town Loop
Centered around the world’s oldest republic, this route connects Rimini, San Leo, and Urbino for a comprehensive experience of mountains and coast.
Route Overview
Days 1–3: San Marino mountain town → Day 4: Rimini → Days 5: San Leo and Verucchio → Day 6: Urbino → Day 7: Return and departure. The itinerary uses Rimini as the main transport hub, with connections by bus and train; full self-drive is also possible.
Days 1–3: San Marino – The Three Towers
- Day 1: Arrive in Rimini → Take the Bonelli bus for about 45 minutes up the mountain → Evening walk along the city wall path → Dinner at Piazza della Prefettura.
- Day 2: Guaita Tower (First Tower) → Cesta Tower (Second Tower) and the Museum of Ancient Arms → Montale Tower (Third Tower) for views → San Marino Cathedral → Changing of the guard at Piazza della Libertà.
- Day 3: National Museum → Museum of Stamps and Coins → Waxwork Museum and other fun exhibits → Take the cable car down to Borgo Maggiore → Valley market and wineries.
Day 4: Rimini – Seaside and Ancient Rome
Arch of Augustus → Temple of Malatesta → Piazza Cavour → Afternoon at Spiaggia delle Sabbie Bianche or traditional Italian beach umbrellas → Evening meal at a restaurant in Rimini’s old town.
Day 5: San Leo and Verucchio
Drive or join a tour in the morning to the San Leo Fortress, built on a massive rock and closely tied to Dante’s legends; afternoon in Verucchio, the birthplace of the Malatesta family, with a castle overlooking the slopes of Monte Mauro.
Day 6: Urbino
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Urbino Historic Centre – Ducal Palace and National Gallery of the Marche → Raphael’s Birthplace → Renaissance-era streets and alleys → Return to Rimini in the evening.
Day 7: Departure
Depart from Rimini Airport or Bologna Airport. You can shop for Emilia-Romagna specialties in Rimini on the way.
Tips
- Public transport to San Leo and Urbino is limited; driving or joining a day tour is more efficient.
- Accommodation in the mountain towns can be tight during the Medieval Festival in summer; book 1–2 months in advance.
- The walking distance between the towers takes about 1 hour; wear non-slip shoes and bring water.
