Nauru 7-Day Classic Itinerary: Island Circumnavigation and Central Phosphate Pit Landscapes
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 Days
Spend a week slowly exploring the world’s smallest island nation, taking in its coastline, lagoons, phosphate terraces, and World War II relics at a relaxed yet fulfilling pace.

Itinerary Overview

With a total land area of just around 21 square kilometers, Nauru’s approximately 20-kilometer ring road connects nearly all accessible parts of the island. A 7-day itinerary allows you to take your time, exploring the coastal lowlands and central plateau in separate phases while covering history, landscapes, and marine activities. The journey mainly involves island walking, private car hire, and short hikes.

Day 1: Arrive in Yaren, Get Acquainted with the Ring Road

After arriving at Nauru International Airport, head to accommodation in the Yaren area. Walk along the ring road to get familiar with the surroundings, and watch the sunset on the southwest coast in the evening. The island is in the Nauru Time zone, which is 12 hours ahead of UTC. The first day is ideal for light activity and adjustment.

Day 2: Aiwo and Anibare: Coast and Bays

In the morning, visit the coastal and harbor area around Aiwo to observe the deep-water port and fishing boat operations. In the afternoon, go to Anibare Bay for a walk or swim amid the lagoon and palm trees. Anibare Bay is one of the best spots on the island for swimming.

Day 3: Buada Lagoon and Rainforest Greenery

Explore the central lowland Buada Lagoon, Nauru’s only freshwater lake, surrounded by lush vegetation—a sharp contrast to the coral and limestone along the coastal ring road. In the afternoon, visit nearby villages and churches to experience daily life on the island.

Day 4: Phosphate Pit Landscapes and Command Ridge

Head to the central plateau (Topside) to see the jagged limestone pillars and pitted landscapes left from nearly a century of phosphate mining—resembling a lunar surface. Then visit Command Ridge to learn about World War II military installations and remnants. Do not cross safety barriers during your walk.

Day 5: Ring Road Hiking

Take a full day to walk or hike sections of the ring road, connecting Yaren, Meneng, Anibare, Aiwo, and other areas. Enjoy views of the coast, gun emplacements, and war ruins along the way. The full loop is about 20 kilometers—you can combine driving and walking based on your stamina.

Day 6: Marine Activities and WWII Relics

Spend the morning out on the water, trying reef fishing or snorkeling. In the afternoon, revisit WWII sites and coastal bunkers to learn about Nauru’s role in the Pacific War. In the evening, shop for handmade souvenirs at the local market area.

Day 7: Wrap-Up and Departure

Relax at your hotel or on the beach in the morning, then pack up and head to the airport for departure. Flights are extremely limited, so confirm schedules in advance and allow plenty of time to reach the airport.

Tips

  • Credit card acceptance is limited across the island, so carry enough Australian dollars in cash.
  • The terrain in the central phosphate pit area is rugged—wear non-slip shoes and avoid climbing unstable rock formations.
  • Traffic drives on the left. Arrange private car hire or car rental details in advance.
