Managua, Masaya, Granada, Ometepe, and León form the most essential route through Nicaragua.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1–2: Managua and Masaya Volcano → Day 3–4: Granada → Day 5: Ometepe Island → Day 6: León → Day 7: Return. Western Nicaraguan cities are close together, and both air-conditioned buses and private transfers are convenient. The total distance is around 400 km.
Days 1–2: Managua and Masaya Volcano
- Day 1: Arrive in Managua, explore the old city center and lakeside areas to learn about the city’s transformation after the 1972 earthquake; in the evening, visit the Tiscapa Crater Lake viewpoint for panoramic views of the city.
- Day 2: Head to Masaya Volcano National Park, drive up to the crater rim to see the smoke and landscape, visit the handicraft market to shop for hammocks and pottery; in the evening, you can join a nighttime lava viewing tour—if the weather is clear, you may see the red glow of lava.
Days 3–4: Granada
- Day 3: Visit Granada Cathedral, Central Park, and the colorful colonial streets, climb the bell tower for rooftop views, and take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the city; in the evening, go to the lakeside dock to watch the sunset and distant volcanoes.
- Day 4: Take an early morning boat tour of the Las Isletas archipelago to see hundreds of small islands, birds, and fortress ruins; in the afternoon, visit the Museum of the San Francisco Convent; in the evening, dine along the Calle La Calzada pedestrian street.
Day 5: Ometepe Island
Take a ferry from the San Jorge port to the island, explore the Virgin Falls and Ojo de Agua natural spring, rent a motorcycle or hire a guide to tour the island, view the Concepción and Maderas volcanoes from afar, and experience the pristine feel of a lake island.
Day 6: León
Travel to León, climb to the roof of Central America’s largest cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) for city views, visit murals and the Revolution Museum; in the evening, head to a nearby beach to watch the sunset or try the Cerro Negro volcano sandboarding experience, sliding down slopes of volcanic ash.
Day 7: Return
Spend the morning shopping for coffee, rum, and handicrafts at the León market, then return to Managua in the afternoon to explore the lakeside area or markets before heading to the international airport for departure.
Tips
- Air-conditioned long-distance buses are available between cities—they’re more comfortable than local minibuses, and it’s recommended to buy tickets in advance.
- Volcano and island activities are weather-dependent, so allow some flexibility.
- Keep your belongings secure and avoid going to remote areas alone at night.
