Journey from the Atlantic coast into the Sahara outposts, connecting the UNESCO World Heritage ancient cities of Atar, Chinguetti, Oualata, and Ouadane, and ending at the migratory bird wetlands of Banc d'Arguin.

Route Overview

D1 Nouakchott → D2–D5 Adrar Plateau and Ancient Cities → D6 Return or Fly to Nouadhibou → D7 Depart from Banc d'Arguin National Park. Road conditions in the desert are poor; it is recommended to rent a 4x4 vehicle with a local guide; for long distances, consider taking a domestic flight to shorten the journey.

D1 Arrival in Nouakchott

Upon arrival, prioritize exchanging for ouguiya, buying drinking water, and picking up sun protection items. In the evening, you can visit the Central Market, Fish Market, and seaside promenade to adjust to the climate and time difference. Overnight travel is not recommended, and personal belongings should be kept secure.

D2 Nouakchott – Atar

Depart early for Atar, the gateway to the Adrar Plateau. The route features typical rocky desert and sand dune landscapes. After arriving in the afternoon, visit the old town and handicraft market. Watch the sunset from a high vantage point in the evening and experience the large diurnal temperature variation of the plateau.

D3 Atar – Chinguetti

Travel to the UNESCO World Heritage ancient city of Chinguetti. Visit the stony old town, the Friday Mosque, and family-run libraries preserving ancient manuscripts, gaining a direct sense of the spectacle of sand dunes approaching the urban area. In the afternoon, you can arrange a camel ride or spend the night at a desert camp.

D4 Around Atar and Richat Structure

Hire a car to visit the Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara, for sightseeing, or go hiking deep into the oasis canyon. The entire day involves traveling by 4x4 vehicle. Bring plenty of drinking water and dry rations, and follow the guide’s instructions.

D5 Ouadane and Oualata

In the morning, visit Ouadane, another UNESCO World Heritage ancient city. In the afternoon, drive to Oualata to admire its geometrically painted houses and distinctive courtyards. The distance between the two sites is considerable; it is recommended to set off early to avoid nighttime travel.

D6 Return to Nouakchott or Fly to Nouadhibou

Return to the capital for rest, or take a domestic flight to the northern port city of Nouadhibou. In the evening, you can enjoy the coastal scenery around the fishing harbor and Cap Blanc, which is also a famous spot for observing monk seals.

D7 Banc d'Arguin National Park

Birdwatch at Banc d'Arguin National Park on the Atlantic coast, and explore the landscape where sand dunes meet lagoons. During autumn and winter, you can see flocks of migratory birds, waders, and seabirds. Return to Nouadhibou or Nouakchott in the afternoon for departure.

Tips

  • Desert itineraries should be arranged through reputable travel agencies; do not stray from confirmed routes alone.
  • Avoid traveling to the eastern and southeastern border areas adjacent to Mali. Assess the overall security situation before departure.
  • There is a significant temperature difference between day and night; prepare both sun protection for the day and warm clothing for the night. Estimate drinking water at about 4 liters per person per day.
