Classic 6-Day Lesotho Itinerary: Fortresses, Waterfalls, and the Sani Pass Highland Loop
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 6 days
Enter and exit via Maseru, connecting the Thaba-Bosiu Fortress, a 192-meter waterfall abseil, and the highest pub in Africa on this highland journey.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–2: Maseru and Historic Fortresses → Day 3: Sehlabathebe and Maletsunyane Waterfalls → Days 4–5: Eastern Highlands and Sani Pass → Day 6: Return to South Africa. Private car hire or joining a 4x4 convoy is recommended; mountain roads are variable, so build in flexibility.

Days 1–2: Maseru and Thaba-Bosiu

  • Day 1: Arrive in Maseru from Johannesburg (or overland border crossing), acclimatize to the altitude, explore craft markets for straw hats and blankets, and watch the sunset over the South African side from the riverbank in the evening.
  • Day 2: Hike up to the Thaba-Bosiu mountain fortress in the morning — the site where King Moshoeshoe I founded the nation and where his royal tomb is located; visit the Aneng Craft Centre in Teyateyaneng in the afternoon to see traditional carpet weaving workshops.

Day 3: Sehlabathebe and Maletsunyane Waterfalls

Drive about 2.5 hours to the mountain town of Sehlabathebe, at 1,800 meters altitude: hike down in the morning to the base of the 192-meter single-drop Maletsunyane Waterfall, with mist in your face; in the afternoon, book a rare commercial waterfall abseil (around 200 meters), operated by professional guides; stay overnight at a basic lodge in town, where horse herders often ride through in the early morning.

Days 4–5: Highlands and Sani Pass

  • Day 4: Head north toward Mohale’s Hoek, passing highland pastures and stone-built villages, and see donkey transport caravans; alternatively, go toward Katse Dam to visit the Lesotho Highlands Water Project exhibition.
  • Day 5: Sani Pass Day: From Underberg on the South African side, join a 4x4 convoy to climb steep gravel slopes, reaching the border post at around 2,874 meters altitude, then celebrate with a commemorative beer at the Sani Mountain Lodge — known as the highest pub in Africa — with views of the Drakensberg Mountains right below.

Day 6: Return

Return via Maseru or directly from the South African side, connecting to your Johannesburg flight.

Tips

  • Both waterfall abseiling and 4x4 convoys require advance booking.
  • Fuel stations are scarce in the mountains, so fill up whenever you see one.
  • For winter trips, bring snow chains and check road conditions daily.

For the whole itinerary, it’s best to arrive at your accommodation early in the afternoon — sunset comes early in the mountains and temperatures drop sharply, making night travel unpleasant. Budget-wise, private car hire with Maseru entry costs about $125–$185 per day, waterfall abseiling and 4x4 convoys are about $70–$115 each, and tipping guides and horse handlers around 20–30 rand per day is appropriate. Set aside cash accordingly.
