Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 6 days
Explore the entire Alpine experience in this 160-square-kilometer country: castles, stamps, cliffside trails, and ski resorts—all in one trip.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–2: Vaduz and the capital area → Day 3: Balzers and the countryside → Days 4–5: Mountain adventures in Malbun → Day 6: Conclude with the Liechtenstein Trail. The whole route is based in Vaduz, with good bus connections—no private car needed.

Days 1–2: Vaduz – A Capital at Leisure

  • Day 1: Take a bus from Zurich, Switzerland via Chur to Vaduz → Visit the Stamp Museum in the city center (free entry) → Walk the vineyard trails at the foot of Vaduz Castle Hill → Enjoy an Alpine dinner at the iconic Red House restaurant in the evening.
  • Day 2: Explore the Liechtenstein Art Museum → Stroll along Vaduz’s main street to the castle viewpoint (the interior is closed to the public, but you can take panoramic photos) → In the afternoon, take the bus to Schaan to see the Hilti factory complex and the town hall.

Day 3: Balzers & the Countryside – Castles and Villages

Take a bus south to Balzers, then hike for 20 minutes up to Gutenberg Castle to overlook the Rhine Valley. In the afternoon, explore the rural churches and farms in villages like Triesen and Eschen. Return to Vaduz in the evening. The countryside area preserves the most authentic rural charm of Liechtenstein.

Days 4–5: Malbun – The Alpine Realm

  • Day 4: Transfer to Malbun via Schaan by bus → In summer, walk the Festungsgeschichte cliffside trail (not for those with a fear of heights; best in good weather); in winter, hit the ski slopes directly → Stay overnight at a mountain lodge in Malbun village.
  • Day 5: Continue with alpine activities—summer options include the Silberhorn Trail or taking the cable car for scenic views; in winter, go skiing or snowshoe hiking → Descend in the afternoon and return to Vaduz for a rest day.

Day 6: Completing the Liechtenstein Trail

The 75-kilometer Liechtenstein Trail connects 11 municipalities across the country. You’ll have already covered most of it in the previous days. On the final day, focus on the riverside and orchard sections around Masescha and Planken, collecting commemorative stamps at each stop. In the evening, take a bus back to Chur, Switzerland, or head to Austria.

Tips

  • Liechtenstein’s flat-rate daily public transport passes are great value, and many hotels provide a free “Liechtenstein Card” that offers unlimited bus rides.
  • The cliffside trail has safety railings, but basic fitness and non-slip shoes are essential—check the weather forecast before setting out.
  • If entering from Vienna or Munich, you can cross the border via Feldkirch in Austria, which is also just a short drive away.
