Ghana 7-Day Classic Route: Accra – Cape Coast – Kumasi – Lake Volta

Route Overview

Day 1–2: Accra → Day 3–4: Cape Coast & Elmina → Day 5: Kumasi → Day 6: Lake Volta & Akosombo → Day 7: Return to Accra for departure. Road connections between southern cities are relatively good; intercity travel can be done by private car or VIP bus.

Day 1: Exploring Accra

Arrive at Kotoka International Airport (ACC) and check into your accommodation in the city. In the afternoon, visit Independence Square and the Black Star Gate to experience the historical significance of Ghana’s independence. In the evening, take a stroll and dine along Oxford Street in the Osu district.

Day 2: Accra’s History and Markets

In the morning, explore the historic Jamestown neighbourhood and its lighthouse, featuring colonial-era architecture and a fishing harbour. Then visit Makola Market to experience local daily life. In the afternoon, you can tour the National Museum and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Enjoy grilled fish by the seaside in the evening.

Day 3: Accra to Cape Coast

Travel south along the coast for about 3 hours to reach Cape Coast. In the afternoon, visit Cape Coast Castle to learn about the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Please maintain a respectful attitude during the visit.

Day 4: Elmina and Kakum

In the morning, head to Elmina Castle, one of the oldest European buildings in Ghana and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, explore Kakum National Park and walk along its canopy walkway to enjoy views of the rainforest from above.

Day 5: Cape Coast to Kumasi

Drive north for about 4 hours to reach Kumasi, the former capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit the Manhyia Palace and the Golden Stool Museum to learn about Ashanti royalty and traditions. In the evening, browse Kejetia Market, one of the liveliest markets in West Africa.

Day 6: Lake Volta and Akosombo

Head to the Akosombo Dam and admire views of Lake Volta, the world’s largest artificial lake. You can arrange a boat trip on the lake and visit local fishing villages. Stay overnight by the lake and enjoy the peaceful evening atmosphere.

Day 7: Return to Accra for Departure

Return to Accra in the morning. If time permits, visit Labadi Beach or go shopping for cocoa products and kente cloth. Head to the airport in the afternoon for your departure.

Tips

  • It’s recommended to hire a local guide when visiting the castles to better understand the historical context.
  • For intercity travel, prioritize VIP buses or private cars; ordinary tro-tros are not suitable for long distances.
  • There are noticeable differences in temperature and climate between the north and south, so bring light jackets and sun protection.
