Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 Days
Experience the city, Santa Claus Village, and Lapland’s aurora in one trip, with smooth connections by plane and overnight train.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–2: Helsinki → Day 3: Travel to Rovaniemi → Day 4: Santa Claus Village → Day 5–6: Saariselkä Aurora → Day 7: Return. Choose between an overnight train (approximately 8–12 hours, with sleeper cabins) or a flight (about 1 hour 20 minutes) from Helsinki to Rovaniemi.

Day 1–2: Helsinki

  • Day 1: Arrive at Helsinki Airport → Take the ring rail line into the city → Visit Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral → Explore Market Square (Kauppatori) → Enjoy a seaside sauna experience at Löyly in the evening.
  • Day 2: Visit Suomenlinna Sea Fortress → Explore Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) → Stroll through Sibelius Park → Discover the Design District and Oodi Central Library.

Day 3: Travel to Rovaniemi

Take an overnight sleeper train or a flight north to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, crossing the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, visit the Arctic Circle Science Centre Arktikum to learn about Lapland’s nature and Sámi culture.

Day 4: Santa Claus Village

Head to the nearby Santa Claus Village, where you can cross the Arctic Circle Line, send a postcard from Santa’s Post Office, and receive a certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle. In the afternoon, enjoy a husky or reindeer sleigh ride, or try a snowmobile tour in winter.

Day 5–6: Saariselkä Aurora

Travel by car to Saariselkä or Inari and check into a glass igloo cabin. During the day, go snowshoeing, ice fishing, or visit the Sámi Museum Siida. At night, join an aurora hunting tour away from light pollution for a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Day 7: Return

Fly back to Helsinki from Ivalo or Rovaniemi, then transfer for your onward journey. If you have extra time, consider shopping for Finnish design items and souvenirs in Helsinki.

Tips

  • Overnight train sleeper cabins should be booked in advance on the VR website, as they are in high demand during peak season.
  • Lapland winters often reach -20°C to -30°C, so it’s advisable to rent professional cold-weather clothing and snow boots.
  • Aurora sightings are highly weather-dependent, so stay for multiple nights to increase your chances.
