Classic route within permitted and safe areas: modernist highland capital, mountain town of Keren, Red Sea port, and island diving.
Itinerary Overview and Permits
Day 1–3: Asmara → Day 4: Keren → Days 5–6: Massawa and Dahlak → Day 7: Return to Asmara. Except for the capital, travel permits are required for Keren, Massawa, and Dahlak, usually arranged by your hosting travel agency. Allow 1–3 days for permit processing. It is recommended to hire a licensed travel agency for transportation and guides throughout the trip.
Days 1–3: Asmara – Africa’s Modernist City
- Day 1: Arrive at Asmara Airport → Walk in the city center: Independence Avenue, Harnet Avenue → Fiat Tagliero Theatre → Baroque-style St. Mary’s Cathedral. Enjoy a macchiato at a street-corner café in the evening.
- Day 2: Imperial Palace (National Museum) → Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral → Art Deco former petrol station and bar buildings → Asmara Market and Sacred Art Market. Head to a viewpoint to see the city’s red-tiled rooftops.
- Day 3: Optional highland day trip: drive down to the Denakil Depression from Segheneity or arrange a section of the Asmara–Massawa railway experience (confirm operation in advance).
Day 4: Keren – Mountain Town and Camel Market
Drive about 2.5 hours northwest from Asmara to Keren: the early morning camel market is Eritrea’s most vivid folk scene, followed by visits to the Shrine of Maria Dei Martiri in the mountains and wartime relics from the Italian and British colonial periods. Stay overnight in Keren or return to Asmara the same day.
Days 5–6: Massawa and Dahlak Archipelago
- Day 5: Descend from the highlands to sea level via one of the world’s engineering wonders, a winding mountain road that passes through the hot eastern Rift Valley lowlands, arriving in Massawa: Ottoman-era Old Town (Three Gates Old Town), coral stone buildings, and harbor sunsets.
- Day 6: Take a boat to the Dahlak Archipelago for a day of diving or snorkeling. Coral reefs, dolphins, and Red Sea shipwrecks are the main highlights. Overnight in Massawa.
Day 7: Return and Departure
Spend the morning capturing the morning light in Massawa’s Old Town, then drive back to Asmara in the afternoon. Organize your permits and foreign exchange declaration documents, and depart the next day from Asmara Airport.
Tips
- Keep your permit, foreign currency declaration form, and hotel registration documents with you at all times, as checkpoints are frequent.
- The altitude drop from the highlands to the coast exceeds 2,300 meters, so those prone to motion sickness should prepare medication in advance.
- The railway experience section operates irregularly and must be requested in advance by your travel agency through the railway authorities.
