Dominica Classic 7-Day Itinerary: Boiling Lake — Middleham Falls — Champagne Reef
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
A route that covers the best of this natural island gem: the world’s second-largest hot spring lake, twin waterfalls, Emerald Pool, and volcano bubble diving.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Arrive in Roseau and settle in → Day 2: Trafalgar Falls and Emerald Pool → Days 3–4: Two-day hike to Boiling Lake → Day 5: Champagne Reef diving → Day 6: North Route — Portsmouth and Indian River → Day 7: Conclude with a visit to the Kalinago Territory. Accommodation suggestion: stay in Roseau for the first part, then switch to a guesthouse on the north coast for the latter part.

Day 1: Arrival and Roseau

Fly via Antigua or St. Lucia to Roseau. Spend the afternoon strolling around the Old Town and the Botanical Gardens to adjust to the time zone. The gardens feature an old banyan tree that survived a hurricane. In the evening, enjoy grilled fish by the seaside.

Day 2: Waterfalls and Emerald Pool

In the morning, visit the twin waterfalls of Trafalgar, a short trail with a round trip of about 1.5 hours. In the afternoon, swim in the secret volcanic pool of Emerald Pool, experiencing a natural pool surrounded by rainforest.

Days 3–4: Two-Day Hike to Boiling Lake

The world’s second-largest hot spring lake is located deep within Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The one-way hike takes about 3.5 hours, passing sulfur springs, river valleys, and steep stairs. It is essential to hire a certified guide and start early in the morning. Those with limited stamina can opt for a half-day hike to Middleham Gorge or Watt Mountain Lake instead. After completing the hike, soak in the hot springs of the Sourfrière Valley to recharge.

Day 5: Champagne Reef and Scotts Head

In the morning, go certified scuba diving at Champagne Reef to see bubbles rising from the sandy seabed due to underwater volcanic activity. Non-certified divers can snorkel or go whale watching. The waters off Dominica are a year-round habitat for sperm whales, which are frequently spotted.

Day 6–7: North Route and Indigenous Territory

  • Day 6: Head north to Portsmouth, visit the Indian River mangroves and the Fort Shirley ruins, and stay on the north coast.
  • Day 7: Visit the Kalinago Territory on the east coast to see traditional canoes and handicrafts, then return to Roseau Airport to depart the island.

Tips

  • Roads across the island are mountainous and winding. Agree on a daily car rental rate with the driver in advance, including fuel costs.
  • Confirm the meeting time with your guide the night before hiking days, as the Boiling Lake trail requires advance booking year-round.
  • After heavy rain, water flow at the waterfalls increases, and Emerald Pool or certain pools may be temporarily closed. Always check the park notices.

Physical Demands and Pace

This itinerary is moderately strenuous: the Boiling Lake hike takes about 6–8 hours with significant elevation gain. Schedule it for days 3–4 when you’re at your fittest, and balance it with easier days before and after. Starting the hike early in the morning helps avoid afternoon clouds and rain, and increases your chances of clear views at the lake. Schedule diving and whale watching after the hikes to let your legs recover. Budget around $125–$225 per person per day for a comfortable experience, excluding guide and transport fees.
