The Cook Islands does not have direct intercontinental flights. Most travelers first fly into Auckland, New Zealand, then take an Air New Zealand flight to Rarotonga. The flight takes about 3.5–4 hours and runs multiple times per week. A NZeTA or appropriate visa is required for transiting through New Zealand, so allow plenty of time for connections.
| Route | Airline | Flight Duration & Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Rarotonga – Aitutaki | Air Rarotonga | About 45 minutes, multiple daily flights |
| Rarotonga – Atiu / Mangaia | Air Rarotonga | About 45 minutes, several flights per week |
| Rarotonga – Northern Atolls | Air Rarotonga | Several hours, limited frequency |
Luggage weight limits on inter-island flights are strict, usually around 15–20 kg. Excess baggage incurs additional fees — confirm with the airline in advance.
On Aitutaki, you can rent motorcycles, bicycles, or use hotel shuttles. On the outer islands, roads are short and traffic is light — most attractions are within walking or cycling distance. There are no ride-hailing services like Uber. It’s best to check with your accommodation in advance regarding transfers and rental options.
