Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 Days
Limited time? Focus on the main island: break it into sections—west coast, south coast, east coast, and inland—to cover more ground with less backtracking.

Itinerary Idea

If you’re short on time, spend all 4 days on the main island of Rarotonga. Divide your trip into four areas—west coast, south coast, east coast, and inland—and explore one section per day. This saves travel time and lets you fully experience the Ring Road and Muri Lagoon.

Day 1: Avarua and the West Coast

Start in the capital, Avarua: visit the Punanga Nui Market, Avarua Church, and the seaside promenade. In the afternoon, head north along the west coast to see Black Rock and Aroa Beach. Watch the sunset at Kavera or Vaimaanga Beach. This area has plenty of dining and accommodation options, making it ideal for your first day.

Day 2: South Coast and Muri

Spend the morning at Titikaveka and Vaimaanga Beach on the south coast, where the shallow, clear waters are great for snorkeling. In the afternoon, head to Muri on the east coast. Swim or kayak in Muri Lagoon, or walk to the nearby island of Taakoka. Enjoy dinner at the Te Vara Nui Cultural Village or at one of the restaurants and night markets around Muri.

Day 3: East Coast Loop and Inland

Drive along the east coast Ring Road through Ngatangiia and Titikaveka to Avana Harbour, where you can try a traditional vaka canoe ride to experience Polynesian seafaring culture. In the afternoon, learn about local history near Muri or explore the inland Wigmore Waterfall and tropical gardens for a glimpse of the volcanic island’s other side.

Day 4: Hiking Trails and Departure

In the morning, hike the Cross-Island Track to the Needle rock viewpoint, then stop by Papaya Falls on the way back. In the afternoon, pack up and head to the airport for departure. If there’s no flight, consider a half-day snorkeling trip in the lagoon before leaving.

Tips

  • The Ring Road bus runs clockwise and counterclockwise, but with limited schedules. If you’re in a hurry, renting a car or motorcycle is recommended.
  • To ride a motorcycle, get a temporary local license at the police station—just bring your driver’s license and passport.
  • The Ring Road is about 32 km long, and you can easily cover the main sights in a day by car.
