Must-visit attractions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Virunga, Mount Nyiragongo, and the Congo River
Virunga, Nyiragongo, okapi, and Garamba are world-famous, but the eastern part of the country currently poses very high safety risks. This guide explains both feasible and inadvisable areas to help you avoid misjudgments.
Eastern Natural Attractions (Currently Not Recommended)
- Virunga National Park: One of Africa’s oldest national parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its mountain gorilla habitat and a dream destination for many travelers. However, it is located in a conflict-prone area in the east. (Only consider visiting when the security situation permits.)
- Mount Nyiragongo: Known for its rare lava lake, one of the largest in the world. The volcano is highly active and the surrounding area poses significant safety risks. Do not attempt to approach or get close to the lava areas on your own.
- Okapi Wildlife Reserve: Protects the rare okapi, located in the northeastern rainforest. Entry is subject to special conditions and involves high security risks, making it unsuitable for regular travel at present.
- Garamba National Park: A savanna reserve in the northeast, known for species such as the white rhinoceros. It has long been affected by armed activity and is not advisable to visit currently.
Although these attractions are extremely appealing, they are all located in the eastern or northeastern regions where the current security situation is severe. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Consular Protection Center advises against travel to these areas. Do not include them in your regular itinerary, avoid attempting to approach them without professional support, and do not trust unofficial promises of access.
Western Region and Rivers
- Congo River: The deepest river in the world. The Kinshasa section features wide waters with views across to Brazzaville on the opposite bank, offering a key insight into the country’s geography. (Half day)
- Inga Falls: Located on the lower Congo River, it features astonishing drop height and water volume, and is part of a region with major hydropower potential. Visits must be arranged officially and conducted under safe conditions. (Half day)
- Matadi: A port city on the lower Congo River where you can experience river transport and scenic gorges. It is an important stop on a western route. (1 day)
Urban Culture
- Kinshasa: One of Africa’s music capitals, with markets, live music venues, and Sapeur culture. It is a relatively accessible city for cultural experiences. (2–3 days)
- Lubumbashi: A mining city in the southeast, located in the copper and cobalt belt. Check local security and transport conditions before traveling. Solo travel is not recommended.
Recommendations for Prioritizing
The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s most famous natural attractions are almost all concentrated in the east — which is precisely the area with the highest safety risks. Therefore, current visitors are better off focusing on the west, including the Congo River, Matadi, and the urban culture of Kinshasa. Consider the eastern attractions as items for a future wish list, to be visited only when the security situation improves, rather than as goals for this trip. Be highly cautious of and refuse any unofficial arrangements claiming to take you into eastern protected areas.
